My son turns 3 March 9th and I was reading about ages and allowance. A lot of people believe three is a good age, but I'm not sure. Also, how much? Like a dollar or even less, or more?? Any advice?

That is a wonderful idea! it doesnt really matter how much. it could be $1 a week like you said. but also give him a "chore" to do. nothing difficult. it could be just picking up after himself or wiping the table off after dinner with a wet paper towel. I give my daughter one quarter for every book she reads completely by herself (minibooks of course) -- and when she reaches her goal of $10, she can use it either for the movies, a new book, or chuck e cheese or something. the books she reads for her school projects & reading requirements dont count. she also earns $3 a week for helping take care of her room & the living room. But she's 6.
3 is a great age! Good luck to you!!!

It depends on your finances as well as where you live ( some parts of the country just have lower prices than others).
Consider the type of things that the child may want to purchase and how long it would be reasonable for him to save for them.
I personally would recommend tying the amount in some way to the chores he is expected to do.
Another thing to consider is that he needs to understand that sometimes the amount of the allowance may need to change. If someone loses a job and the rest of the family must tighten their belts, then he should understand that his allowance will be expected to change also.
Something else to consider: Some banks now have savings accounts for children where they earn points for making deposits. These points can be redeemed for small items at the bank. You may want to check this out eventually - perhaps when he is old enough to understand that Mommy and Daddy don't keep ALL their money at home either.

A $1.- at Three?!! I was TEN before I knew what a Dollar looked like (Once upon a time... :) )! But, times have changed I guess... In your son's case, I would start him off with a Quarter, & then Raise his Allowance 25 cents every year- until he hits Grade School- when you can raise it a Dollar every year. But; DON'T just GIVE him the $$$...-Tell him there are things he has to DO to earn it- like pick up his toys, or brush his teeth, or whatever... -So that he doesn't grow up thinking Money grows on Trees (or exclusively in YOUR Bank Accounts !).

I say you should start giving an allowance when the child is old enough to do a couple chores. From there, I'd say $20-$25 per month is reasonable. I think you should start giving it though maybe around 8 yrs old.

we started when the twins started kindergarden one dollar a week if they picked their room
each year a dollar more and more responsibility
at this point it's 5 dollars a week , but for each day that they don't complete the basic chores of picking up after themselves, putting their laundry away, and bringing home their homework and doing it they lose a dollar, actually by the end of the week they can owe me money, It has happened on occasion.

yea my parents started me at 3. i got 5 bux every 2 weeks until i was about 8 then it went up to 10 when i was 13 20 and when i was 15 i got 50 and then when i turned 18 it stopped haha but i work so its cool. it gives kids the opportunity to learn the value of money. it develops math skills too!!!

I don't think my son could have handled allowance that young. I started mine at age 5, and he seemed to do ok with it, but even at that age he struggles to undertsand how much value bills and coins have, or if he has enough for whatever item he wants.

use money to teach them a lesson
when they can do small chores give them an appropriate pay. positive reinforcement goes a long way in the long run.
