Depends on your age males over 50 have increased rate of bone spurs on the neck(osteophytes)that can encroach on nerves. Males and females can get DDD=degenerative disc disease its a fancy term for arthritis and is very common as we age.Posture when you are awake and when you sleep are important things to consider.

Herniated disks. I have had them for over 5 years and they cause neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and pain under arm pit and in arm. Yes, it does get worse as the day goes on especially when doing activities that cause prolonged positioning of neck.

Get a Chiropractic adjustment to correct your body's alignment.

When vertebrae are even slightly out of alignment the pain radiates out to other areas.
