My cat had the same problem, it turned out to be allergies. Specifically, to flea poop. Joy, right? She'd had fleas before and I guess we didn't brush her quite well enough to get it all out. So her skin got irritated and she started licking all the time in the place she could reach best, just above her tail. Our cats are outdoor, so we didn't see that. A cat's tongue is like sandpaper, so she got a huge bald strip where she licked and it kept growing, so we took her to the vet for that allergies diagnosis. (He told us to brush her more often and recommended Advantage, by the way) Go the vet and see what they say, it may be allergies, it could be something entirely different, but they can almost always solve a pet problem far better than us folks on here, especially since they can look your cat over in person! Good luck, God bless, and I hope your cat is right as rain very soon! >^..^<

I had a cat that was not spayed, she lost all the hair in the same area, and I had one that was spayed after two litters, she continued to loose hair in the same areas.
My GUESS it is hormonal! and related to breeding and child birth!
I have a big barn and get a lot of cats, I can only afford to help a few. People drop off too many, every cow looks like a good kitty home.
But, the not spayed or spayed late theory is the best I have to offer for the volume of strays that pass through my small farm.

Just a note...my cat Winkers had this going on and after some time developed kidney disease ( I had to euthanize her)....maybe the hair loss was unrelated to the kidney problem but....in doing some research though I found out hyperthyroidism can cause hair loss in cats.

It could be many things.
She could be allergic to her food, fleas, or maybe a new laundry detergent you are using on your bed sheets.
It is also possible she has mange, it is treated easily enough. The vet will do a skin scraping to see if it really is mange, before treating.
It is even possible she has anxiety.
The only way to be sure is to take her to the vet.

Their are some medicated cat/dog wipes that you can use to clean them. You can use this if you may have missed any dead, flaky skin on her back. And/Or you may need to change her diet. You could feed her some food that's meant to make a smooth, silky coat of fur. Hope I helped. : )

Hey! the same thing happened to my dog. i called the vet and they said he was allergic to something we didn't know what exactly. they told me to go to wal mart and get some childrens benedryl. they also told me of a spray that they sell for animials that have itchy skin that would provide some relief. i used it on my dog and never looked back. i would still call the vet. they will most likely tell you over the phone what they think it is.

Two reasons: 1) Cats MOLT (not the proper word) during the year.. that is, they shed more at some times of the year than others; 2) High protein diet is best for a cat to reduce the shedding.. other than that. it is NORMAL for a cat to shed

Your cat is stressed out and due to stress it licks its hair off.. its not falling out by itself. My cat has the same problem by its eyes it licked itself bald! Its sorta like when us women get stressed out and some people resort to plucking their eyebrows. Same concept!
