Unfortunately the 40GB PS3 model is not backwards compatible with PS2 games because Sony did not include the PS2 graphics chip (the "emotion" chip, i think that's what its called) in the 40gb model, supposedly it wast to cut costs, hence the lower price.
I know their are ps2 emulators out their, but none that i know of that work on a PS3.
You would think it would make sense for Sony to make one available, but i wouldn't hold your breath.

it's IMPOSSIBLE ! seriously , if you could easily just install an emulator Sony would add it to all ps3s . you can't because the ps3 os won't allow installation of any program like that or play a ps2 disc without the hardware and motherboard changes . if everyone now complaining about lack of ps2 play on a ps3 had simply purchased a backwards compatible console when they were available instead of wanting a cheaper ps3 Sony wouldn't have removed it to cut costs . just buy a ps2 if you aren't ready for next gen gaming .

There is no such thing. Sony stated, that they're shifting their attention to PS3. The last PS2 game announced to be launched in 2009, though.

There isn't one. If you wanted to play PS2 games, you should have bought the 80GB PS3.
Sony has stated they won't be releasing an emulator for the 40GB PS3 games - in fact their official statement is "Buy a PS2".
