Strep throat: Strep throat is an infection caused by a type of bacteria called streptococcus, which can lead to serious complications if not adequately treated.

Streptococcus: A group of bacteria, familiarly known as strep, that cause a multitude of diseases. The name comes from the Greek strepto- meaning twisted + kokkos meaning berry, and that is exactly what strep look like under the microscope, like a twisted bunch of little round berries. Illness caused by strep includes strep throat, strep pneumonia, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever (and rheumatic heart valve damage), glomerulonephritis, the skin disorder erysipelas, and PANDAS.

it can also cause a skin eating infection which is pretty gross.

Listen, I don't mean to scare you, but I went through something like that a few years ago. I couldn't swallow, was tested and found negative for strep but the pain kept getting worse. As it turned out, I had a bacterial infection and my throat was closing up. I had to go into the hospital for 3 days to fix that one. Never knew where it came from either. Just INSIST that your general doctor write a prescription for you to see an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. Your insurance will cover it. Good luck

Streptococcus is a bacteria. A bacteria can infect any open area in the body, such as mucous membranes, and open wounds. Strep can cause meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis and it's a species of strep which is responsible for necrotizing fasciitis, or "flesh eating bacteria". If you have a strep throat infection, you will not necessarily get it anywhere else. However, it is highly contagious to other people as strep throat.

oh yes it can. group B strep which causes strep throat typically only causes pharyngitis, but there are many, many other species of streptococcus that can cause a whole host of infections. different strep species cause skin infections, pneumonia, meningitis, diarrhea and mouth infections after dental procedures, just to name a few.

also, its a bacteria, not a virus.

strep is a type of virus, and yes it will only grow in the throat. usually a culture (swab test) of your throat is taken. pustules that are white/yellowish develop, along with severe pain. There are other viruses that are related to strep, that will exhibit the same symptoms on other parts of your body(mrsa) but are not strep and need to be treated with a different antibotic.
