Who has the legal right to do this? Can credit card companies do that? My boss told me that only the IRS can do that if I mess up my taxes.

Your employer is required to garnish your wages whenever presented with a court order to do so.

Court orders to garnish wages typically come from the following sources:

1)Child Support

2) Back taxes

3) vehicle registration collections

4) court ordered judgments against you

Typically, you may have a maximum of 50% of your net wages withheld from your check and forwarded to the agency you are paying to.

If being garnished by more than one agency at a time, the rules can change. You still typically can be subjected to 50% of your net being deducted, but the way it gets distributed changes.

That depends upon state law.

Some states such as FL and TX prohibit any garnishment of wages based upon a judgment secured by a commercial creditor. In those states you can only have your wages attached for back taxes and child support.

Other states allow up to 25% of your disposable income to be garnisheed to satisfy a judgment.

Other states fall somewhere in between the two.

The credit card company would have to get a court judgement against you in order to garnish your wages.
