A Muslim is a self-professed follower of Islam.
An Islamist is a Muslim who wants Islam to become the dominant world religion by any means possible.
Not all Muslims are Islamists. All Islamists are, by default, Muslims.

The term Islamist is normally linked with the orthodox Muslim political view, as in, "Islamist Fascist".

An Islamist is like a Zionist Jew or a Christian Dominionist.
It is the politicization of the faith where the person believes their faith should be in charge of governments.
