There's this thing my community service group is doing. We each own a platoon of about 30 soldiers. We pretty much send things in bulk to them overseas every month. The biggest thing that we have to worry about is that they can not have anything scented or pornographic or even alcoholic. Good gifts, which this may sound very weird, are non-scented deodorant, lotion, shaving cream. If you want something more fun for the holidays you could send board games that require strategic thinking like Battleship. You can also just send a bunch of card decks to them.

I can't remember the "any overseas soldier" address, but call the local Veteran's Center or Blue Star group. I was never in war but deployed to very austere places. We loved candy, socks, underwear, (sometimes there's no laundry and you have to wash your unmentionables by hand) chapstick, sealed boxes of ho hos, twinkies, etc; extra ink pens, tablets, and envelopes; disposable razors, and bandaids (for the blisters on feet.) Consider extra candy, any kind, that they can pass out to the children where they are.

you cannot send packages to random soldiers. i would suggest asking around to see if you know anyone with someone overseas and ask them for their contact information. if you prefer to go with a "random soldier" approach, look for online organizations that provide you with wish lists that soldiers have submitted. just make sure you choose a reputable organization before donating.

snacks: crackers, cookies, all beef pepperoni (pork products not allowed), nuts, dried fruit, granola/breakfast bars, candy, anything "instant": oatmeal, tea, coffee, hot chocolate
magazines, books, crossword puzzles, word games, playing cards, blank notecards and christmas cards to send home, pens
toiletries; soap, shampoo, shaving cream (non-aerosol), deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes,
car air fresheners (for their quarters or just to remind them of the pine scent for the holidays), odor eaters, travel mugs, disposable cameras, kleenex
you can get a flat rate box free at the post office and ship everything you can fit in there for 8.95. you will need to fill out a customs form, which is really easy.
you could contact a post office to ask if they have a general mailing address to send these things

We sent my brothers unit magazines, crossword puzzles, movies/dvd's, dominos, playing cards and of course some treats and snacks. They need other stuff beside just neccesity items at least to give them something to relax a bit. We would send pringles, gum, mints, beef jerkey, fruit cups, cookies, powder gatorade, tuna lunch kits, granola bars.

the post office is starting to get very weird with sending "to any soldier" boxes. why dont you go to www.americasupportsyou.mil and volunteer on one of the package sending sites by adopting a soldier!

My husband asked for magazines, food (like...ramon noodles, beef jerky...things like that) , new music, new movies...anything to make them feel like they are still in touch with whats going on here!
