The cats are now 2 years old and are brothers. One of them is very mellow, and the other one is very mischievous and scratches everything. I'm worried if I get rid of one, the other one would be traumatized. I can only handle one right now - for financial and sanity reasons.

Not wise to tear them apart from each other... The one you choose to keep may act out and make your life a living hell or get severely depressed. The other kitty will definitely be traumatized. Try at all costs to keep them together...Try to keep them both..
If you can't maybe you can give them both away temporary to a family member or friend or find a new home all together. I guess you could ask for them back but kitties are very temperamental..... They do not like changes at all....

Try to deter the behavior of the mischievous one. It sounds like he trying very hard to get your attention and being a kitty it is normal...
Ask your vet for some recommendation.. Get some scratching boxes.... Spray him with water as soon as he starts up...
Good luck!!! I am a cat lover!!! I have had 3 cats.... One lived to 16 years old. One live to 10 years old Now my only cat Idgie is 11 years old..

It would be very traumatic and stressful to separate these cats. If you MUST get rid of one, perhaps you could give them BOTH to a good home, where they won't be separated.

In the future, be sure you can handle the way a CAT behaves -- being mischievous and active and playful and scratching is NORMAL for cats! Either decide you like cats for how they are, or don't have cats. I don't intend to sound mean, but I've seen this happen far too often -- people want to change the way cats are, instead of enjoying them for being CATS!

Good luck.

I have seem a lot of cats with behavioral problems and this is one of the things that can cause them. If you get rid of the hyper cat you could end up with the mellow one becoming hyper or doing other things that you don't want it doing. Like pottying outside of the litter box. If you can't handle them, then I would try to find a home for both of them together. Getting rid of just one is asking for trouble.

good luck!

I've got three cats - with three different personalities, but they are all female. Cats in general are mischievious and scratch things. Don't get rid of your cat because he does this - he's being normal (not his fault).

Dumping a pet is like your parents dumping you because you were too much of a hassle. Don't traumatize your pet by getting rid of it.

that's a shame to give one away... financial reasons? i have 6 cats and they aren`t any more trouble than 1 or 2 would be.. they all have their own personality and they are all funny in their own way...4 of them were throw outs that ended up at the end of my driveway in the frigid cold..i knew that if i took them in they would be mine and guess what as soon as i looked into their tiny little eyes i was a goner.. i guess if you truly love animals then you would keep them both.....only a person that really loves her family (pets) would keep them both...all my babies have been spayed and neutered....

thats very sad...keep both or keep none...if you decide to keep none then make sure they both go to the same house and check it out and make sure it is a good home...you cant separate them after them being together for 2 yrs....
