I will be meeting my gf's parents for the first time this weekend and wish to make a good impression. Never done this with a prior gf, though, so not experienced at all. Is there a "generic" gift for this occasion. Likely I will not give that, but it would help me guage the level of gift that is appropriate.

Flowers. If you know they have a special interest in something then you can be more creative. Don't get too fancy or too expensive. You don't have to give a gift if you're just meeting for a few minutes to collect your gf. If you're visiting for a meal (perhaps take wine) or staying for the weekend then do take a gift.

I don't think there is a generic gift. You could always bring dessert. Or you could bring a bottle of wine.

Flowers for her mother won't hurt. I wouldn't risk bringing a gift for her father though.

a fruit basket is always good... who dosent like fruit?? or a plant? a bottle of wine is fine but over rated, and overdone.... i would go with a bottle of port if you want to take the wine route!!! but the mom will like the fruit... hey, a bottle of port for dad and fruit basket for mom??
