Speaking in Tongues was given to the Apostles and disciples in order to reach people whose languages were unknown to them...so they could communicate the Gospel to other nations...
And when they did speak in tongues...there was always someone there to translate what they were saying so as not to cause confusion....
I am not sure what tongue people are speaking today when they begin "babbling" as it were....I have witnessed this only once, and it certainly made me uncomfortable, but I cannot say if it was legitimate or forced by an active imagination...
There are some who have been said to speak the angelic tongue...which obviously we would not understand and could certainly be considered babble to those without understanding...but if there is no edifying property, or purpose to it, then I cannot believe it is proper speaking in tongues as the Bible describes it.
My understanding of speaking in tongues would be like this: I go to Ethiopia...I cannot speak the native dialect...God grants me the ability to speak their language and I share the Gospel with them in their own tongue...thereby glorifying God all the more in their eyes by this ability.
Otherwise, it seems very superficial and harmful to fellow believers, and to the faith.
Take Care and God Bless.
Edit: All gifts that God gives us are to glorify Him, to be used in ways that are edifying. The people Christ healed were known to be crippled, or deformed since birth so there could be no doubt about the truth of the healing. He healed lepers...whose bodies were literally falling apart. Our gifts, such as tongues would only be given with specific purpose to glorify God. If there is no reason to speak tongues, no need to share the Gospel with a group who do not understand the language...then how is this edifying and glorifying God?

Speaking in tongues is a very important component of some people's faith. True, my church doesn't practice it (although there's a charismatic movement among some parishioners, but speaking in tongues is definitely not practiced during regular services). However, I'd really hesitate to insult the religious practices of other Christians by calling it "clucking" and making fun of it. I don't like it when people make fun of my church's style of worship, so I don't want to do that to anyone else. I've visited a number of different churches where people have spoken in tongues, and I respect their right to do so, if they feel that it brings them closer to the Holy Spirit. I have a friend who speaks in tongues, and I would never cut him down for doing so.

Tongues was ALWAYS in a known language, and was a sign meant for the non-believers.
Consider Pentecost, when Peter spoke and everyone heard him speak in their own language. It was during a festival time, and people from all over were in Jerusalem. Many different languages there.
These modern day people consider it to be a "private prayer language, or the tongues of Angels."
There is no basis to believe this from the Bible, I think. Yet, they seem to find it in there.

Speaking in tongues means a known language and their will also be some one to interpret it if in church or else they must be silent . There is also the tongues of angels which no one knows ,., but its not the gibberish you hear at some places . The book of acts explains this when the crowed heard the apostles speaking in many different tongues they all understood

No, you are not the only one who thinks it is insulting. The account in Acts is clearly a true gift of the holy spirit - Those who spoke actual languages that were foreign to them. Babbling incoherently is insulting to anyone with a reasonable amount of intelligence. The phenomenon is less than 100 years old, as the American Pentecostal sect were the first to devise this deceptive practice.

I am studying to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses and in the bible, when Jesus sent his holy spirit down to the people waiting in the room, they WERE speaking in tongues. But not the way people are doing it now. I have no idea where that came from. When the Bible spoke about the people speaking in tongues, they started to speak different LANGUAGES amongst themselves. That's what it was. And it was comprehensible. Not that babbling and shrieking stuff. It's actually kinda scary.

I have seen someone talking in tongues before, it was freaky and looked bad to me. I understand why you would think the way you do. I don't think they are really talking different, it is just made up.They are not special, they do that to make others mad. I don't believe in any of that stuff now, I seen the light and I don't believe in the bible **** anymore. Now that I don't believe in it I feel a lot better about life and myself. A lot of people talk down about others in religion to, but don't get down on yourself because you can't do what they are doing. Just think of them as people who are trying to act like they are more special. We are all human and no one is more special then the other, I would even think of people that do get in the spirit to be freaks, people that have something wrong with the brain because that is not normal. Hope I helped somewhat.

i think of you may take the stress off your self approximately last doorways and such. merely open your self to gaining awareness of approximately different religions (no longer in basic terms Wicca) and examining your very own thoughts/ideals. you do no longer could close any doorways till there comes a time (if there comes a time) which you're arranged. you nevertheless have plenty to examine approximately Wicca earlier you additionally can evaluate no remember if this is authentic for you. to illustrate "An ye injury none, do what you will" isn't a rule or regulation in Wicca. this is noted as the Wiccan Rede, the observe 'rede' potential "advice." It replaced into reported by way of a Wiccan interior the Nineteen Seventies and caught on; some cutting-part books and cyber web websites carry it up as though this is the equivalent of a commandment for us. whether this is no longer. And it would not easily command us from no longer doing injury, it in basic terms says that if what we are doing isn't hurting every person, have at it without guilt. human beings throw those words around in Wicca commonly without somewhat expertise them. whether it may be impossible to stay without doing injury, considering the fact which you could no longer even eat without there being a loss of life of an animal or plant. in specific circumstances we are compelled to make complicated alternatives. Wiccan tenets easily coach us greater relating to the complexities of existence and alternatives... no single little arbitrary capture words ever somewhat provide us each and all the solutions. Wiccan morality is plenty deeper than that. additionally, conversing as somebody who replaced into molested by way of family as a baby and accused of mendacity approximately it by way of different family (who in all probability merely did no longer % to handle the immensity of this type of concern, it replaced into much less complicated to easily fake it did no longer take place and that i replaced right into a liar)... specific, the "rule of three" does take this is toll on human beings, in a fashion. i do no longer in my opinion have self belief something comes lower back better thrice fairly, or that this is a regulation/rule of any type of Gods, yet that this is merely the belief of reason and consequence. You get carry of what you sow. people who do discpicable acts like that commonly deliver their very very own downfall.

you may not realize it but your insulting the Holy Spirit, the gift of tongues is just that a gift....Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
and Jesus never changes.........Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. ......so why do you think because it was 2000 years ago it cant be now,,.....and this scripture is why other denominations and don't speak with the gift and why it bothers you, remember this is all scripture.1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
