Why was it so necessary for the pope to call a crusade every once in a while against the Muslims?, and was there any country in Europe who did'nt join the crusade?

Jack, you make it sound as if the pope had a spinning wheel and whenever it landed on "crusade" it was time to armour up and go fight. All of the countries in europe that believed in catholicism fought in crusades. It's just about time for another one???

In short, Palestine started out as a Roman province. It was overrun by Arabic forces who killed all the Christian government officials and Church leaders, and placed the Christian populations into segregated neighborhoods. That was the situation for several centuries, and the Arabic governors in Roman Palestine allowed European pilgrims to travel to Jerusalem and venerate the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Around the 11th century, bandits started attacking Christian pilgrims on the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem. Then an Arabic general destroyed most of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. That incident prompted the first Crusade, which was an attempt to capture the city of Jerusalem.

As for your question, Orthodox Christian nations did not participate in the Crusades. In fact, they were the victims of the Fourth Crusade. And the Crusades were far more complex than just Christian vs. Muslim. There were Christian and Muslim factions fighting side-by-side on both ends of conflicts. Some Christians opposed the Crusaders, and some Muslims supported them. As with any protracted conflict, the real story is more complex than what you can fit into a two hour movie.

Not to sound biased, but it surprising that western Europe waited until they lost the entire Middle East, all of Asia Minor, most of Greece, several areas in the Balkans, all of North Africa, all of Spain, most of the islands of the Mediterranean, part of southern France, and almost the entire Byzantine Empire before they organized a concerted retaliation.

The Crusades were a complex thing. Greed, lust for power are some of the causes. On the other hand, the Crusades served the purpose of stopping the advance of the moslems over Europe. Spain was under moslem rule centuries, the south for over 700 years, until it could be recovered. Nobody can complain, as Islam started as a warrior's religion in the first place.

Muslim armies had conquered much of northern Africa, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Spain, which had been some of the most heavily Christian areas in the world.

Thousands, and possibly millions, of Christians died during this drive to eventually bring the entire world under Islam.

The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II to check the advance of the Muslims and regain control of the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

I am sure that some atrocities were committed by both sides during this war but by most people's judgment this was a just war.
