This is a tough one. GEN Taylor was first into Mexico after his scouts were bushwhacked at Palo Alto, and Taylor delayed de Santa Anna and the bulk of the Mexican army at Buena Vista as GEN Winfield Scott landed at Veracruz. From there it was a running fight to the gates of Mexico, D.F. My guess: Buena Vista, as de Santa Anna, unaware of the U. S. naval force westbound and down on the Gulf with an entire army aboard, marched off to shut down Taylor.

I don't really think there was one, it was pretty one-sided.

If anything, I would say the invasion of Mexico at Vera Cruz and the force that entered from the north that came out of Ft. Riley, Kansas. From there is was right to the "Halls of Montazuma."
