They don't arrest people for not signing up for selective service.
Although they can.
If a person fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years.
The biggest drawbacks, are no federal financial aid
And no Federal employment in the future.
Some states ( 41 so far ) have thier own laws regarding non registering for selective service.
Those include, no state education aid, no state employment and no drivers licenses.
Just because someone might not like the Iraq war, is a silly reason to not register with selective service.
It's not like a draft is coming anytime soon.
And if a draft did happen, they would still find you.

Why... is there a draft? You would only be hurting yourself. They dont put you in jail for that. All you will do is lose any federal benifits you may want. If everyone did it, it would save a lot of money paid out in Pell Grants and other things.
I don't hate selective service dodgers, I just think they don't have everything upstairs. There are legal ways to get out of a draft, IF THERE WAS ONE, but there isn't a draft, so the whole idea is kind of pointless and it send no message at all to the US Government. If there was a draft anyway, it would include females and they would probably just use social security numbers instead so they would still find you.

If you're a male American citizen over the age of 18, you have a legal obligation to register for the Selective Service. That is only used if there is a draft, and there hasn't been one since the early seventies. If you avoid it, you can be prosecuted for it; and the government would have every right to do so. Given all the rights, priviledges, and luxuries you've been able to enjoy on behalf of the government and the security and economy we enjoy here, signing a little card should be the least you can do to give back in SOME way.
Popularity rarely, if ever, has anything to do with what's actually right or wrong. Only teenagers, or people who haven't advanced past being one, base their judgments on what's "popular".

If you fail to register, you will be disqualified from ever receiving a federally backed loan... including student loans, mortgages, and any other Federally funded loan program. That's a pretty huge incentive... And there is no draft... so selective service registration has nothing to do with the current conflict. All those servicemen and women are volunteers.

Registering for selective service is required. There is no draft but there are benefits you can't get if you don't register. Federal student loans being the one I can think of now.
Now I have a question for you? Name me a war that was popular then or now?

There is no requirement that you register.
However - if you do not then you will not be eligible for student loans, and government job, a job with defense contractor, a security clearance, or any job that requires a bond.
Think of it this way - if you are refusing the duties of citizenship - why should you get the full benefits of citizenship.

No, but they will catch you.
I had to do it when I turned 18 and the 1st Gulf war was on the horizon.
Just go do your duty and fill out the forms.
If a draft does start again, with any luck you can get 5 deferrments like Cheney, complain about an anal cyst like Rush Limbaugh, or have your Congressman daddy pencil whip you in front of 2,000 other applicants for the Champaign Squadron of the Texas Air National Guard.

If you don't want to register, it is OK with me.
They can't put the whole country in jail, but I am sure there is room for you.

you don't have to register, we're not going to hold your hand and make you, but by not registering you are not eligable for student loans and you also miss out on other benefits that your peers will recieve when they sign up, and if you don't you can go to jail.
