The Dodge Charger used engines from the "A" block family ,318,340,360 as well as those from the "B" block family (383,400,440). The "A" block originated with the thin casting 273 ci introduced in 1964 in the Dart,Valiant and Barracuda. By mid model year in 1967 the old 318 with zig zag valve covers was replaced by the new 318 which was based on the lighter weight 273. In Dodge the "A" block was the "small block" and the "B" block was the "big block"

Darrell K is wrong on saying the heads alter the cubic inch, bore and stroke determine the cubic inch although the physical size of the small blocks (318, 340, and 360) are pretty much the same, big blocks are the 383 and 400 and the RB (raised block) 440 however he is pretty much correct on short block and long block definitions.

small blocks 318, 340, 360 all actually have the same size block...it's the different size heads that alter the displacement.
same for big blocks 383, 440, 426

short block means it does not come with heads, intake manifold, carb., yada yada, only the block with internals

long block is pretty much a complete motor (usually no carb), from oil pan to intake manifold

I did forget to mention bore and stroke...
