This question seems to be popping up a lot lately. Perhaps somebody is going to take a stand and do something.

It means, "Should everybody have to serve their country in the military?" Those who say no, don't believe people owe anything to their country... well, at least not themselves.

Generations lived with the draft. Our society didn't crumble half as much as it has since the draft ended. My grandfather lived with the draft, my father did too... and so did I. I don't believe any of us are particularly evil people. My grandfather was Chief Mechanic for the Port of Oakland for about 20 years, built a house and two churches. My dad was an engineer and teacher. I was a college professor and department chair... among other things. My cousin was also subject to draft. He's about to retire from Chief Building Inspector for a city in Washington State. None of us have ever been in trouble with the law. None of us have been a burden on society. All of us have paid our taxes and done our best to contribute to our country.

My humble opinion: Absolutely... reinstate the draft. Here's why.

First off-all men are required to register with the Selective Service when they turn 18; this is signing up for the draft. Reinstating the draft means to start actually drafting people into the military; the draft itself is not needed or wanted by the military at this time and politicians would never vote to reinstate it so the question is moot. Personally I think everyone should give some sort of service to the government whether military, Park Service, Youth Corps, Volunteer America, Peace Corps or so on so just to draft people into the military if some thing really bad happens and we need it yes-just talking about it to scare people though is a cheap politicians trick and right now that is all it is.

There will not be a new draft. Yes, you are required at age 18 to register, but that is all that will ever happen. It took the military years and years to recover from the last one. No one wants a repeat of that. The quality of soldier drops during a draft for the simple reason that most would do anything to get out. An all volunteer force is much more motivated and therefore more effective. Besides, the only people who have suggested a draft are Dems in Congress. Not one Republican has. This is just a scare tactic to make young people run out and vote the anti-war ticket. Even the Dems that have suggested it voted against a new draft.

When there is a military draft, young men are drafted into the Army whether they want to or not. I am a female and served in the military during the Viet Nam War. I don't see any problem with women being drafted in this day and age, should the draft be reinstated. Quite honestly, I hope the situation in Iraq never gets to the point that Congress must consider reinstating the draft.

It's Democrat code for, I don't like the war or the President and I'd like to turn as many people as possible against him and since I buy wholeheartedly into the myth that draft protests are what ended the Vietnam War, we need to have a draft so there can be protests of it. And since I also hate the military and a draft would be a fast way to kill it by ramping up costs, bogging down training, reformulating doctrine and forcing double-standards, well, that's just icing on the cake.

men age 18 are still required to enroll in selective service. i don't know about young women. the question should the draft be reinstated is pretty self explanatory.

It means should the draft be brought back so they can draft (Force you to go tin the army) back. If it comes back you can be called up to serve in the army or what ever, even if you do not want to go to war. And yes I think it should come back.
