My dad's lower back has been hurting him for a while now. It's mostly on the left side, right up alongside the spinal column. The pain, he thinks its muscular, goes down his leg as well, which made me think it was sciatica... But the sciatic nerve is in the back of the leg, his leg hurts in the front. The two pains might be completely unrelated sore muscles, but I'm not positive. Any suggestions?

He needs to go to the Doc, it could be a trapped nerve higher up in the spine or in the groin area. Best to be safe than sorry. Good Luck

Different levels of the spine go to different parts of the body. For instance the nerves from L2-L3 go to the front of the leg, where the nerves from L5-S1 go to the back of the leg. It is hard to say what is really bothering him without an examination. It sounds like your dad may have disc bulge but at the level of L2-L3 the most common area for a disc bulge is L5-S1. You should have him checked out by a McKenzie specialist, but be cautious there are physical therapist and chiropractors that say they are McKenzie specialist, but really just practice what they think is McKenzie. You can look for one on the Internet. The part that worries me is the fact that you put that your dad has had this for a while. I hope this helps

Without knowing what he was doing when it started I'd have to guess that he's injured his left psoas muscle. It attaches from the front of the lumbar spine, passes through the pelvis and inserts on the front of the femur ( the big bone in the upper leg ). Also the rectus femoris ( long head of the quadraceps). Both are used in hip flexion.
