Depends on the gun.
You can get factory shipping records of most Colts.
Winchester shipping records are pretty much complete.
So are Smith & Wesson.
It depends upon how old and what type of gun you are referring to because not all guns have factory records.

As Doc has already said it depends on the firearm and when it was manufactured. The top firearms manufacturers like Remington, Winchester, Smith & Wesson, as well as most military firearms are traceable, some on the Internet. Others can be obtained by contacting the Company (Manufacturer) and having the Company Historians research your firearm's history. This is common but there is a fee involved for this service. Many firearms have different variations on the same models, and those are hard to trace at times.
There was a time, that serial numbers were not required by law so they didn't exist. Firearms produced without serial numbers are obviously harder to trace. Most firearms data can confirm the manufactuer and month of manufacture, but not a particular day in that month....

It depends on who made the gun, and how long ago.
Smith & Wesson and Ruger have a pretty complete set of records, but Colt lost lots of records on two different ocassions.
But for many different makes and models, you can get learn the year of manufacture from the serial number if nothing else.
If you decide to post the serial number online, don't post the whole serial number. For example, if the serial number is 123456, just post the serial number as 123XXX. You can still find the year of manufacture and not fully identify your gun.
