My father in law gave me a hand gun to protect my family against any potential intruders in my home and I would like to know what is the BEST way to store it but yet keep it loaded and ready to go in case someone ever breaks into my home? I have a 3 yr old in my home so I need to be really safe about it.
Thank you.

If your father gave you the gun and is in Law Enforcment, I'm assuming he also gave you some helpful hints on this subject. The down side to gun boxes is that they are easily moved/removed from a home. A gun safe is your best bet with a 3 year old running around your house. It also will ensure that when you're not home, that gun isn't going anywhere. Your Dad will be able to tell you the problems with guns being taken during burglaries.

What other measures of security have you taken? A home alarm with sensors on all points of entry and windows? A dog? These measures will help you chase away a potential burglar without having to take a life. If you're going to have a gun, you have to ask yourself if your ready to kill someone. Are you?

It is against the law to store a handgun (or any other gun for that matter) loaded, in Canada. Thank-God I live there.

There is no best way to store a loaded handgun. Your best defence against intruders is a good home security system.

Teach your child gun safety. Make sure children know that guns are not toys. A lock box is best. Then you can leave it loaded.

A 5-button cipherlock gunsafe...they have one model with a hand-shaped indentation so you can press your hand into it in the dark and open the lock by touch.

Get a gun case with a dial lock system.

Buy a lockbox that has a quick entry keypad. THEN practice until you can open it with either hand, with your eyes closed, in one second on the first try.
