Thiw is a rather common question on Answers. My answer is always...Why do you want to pretend to be something you are not? If you are looking for some way to be unique, interesting to others, this is NOT it. You will sound like a fake and people will think less of you, not more. Find a different, more constructive way to be interesting. Most people find a person who is interested in OTHERS and is a great listener to be interesting.

Like the U.S.A., Britain has many, many accents and dialects. So the only way to acquire a truly British accent would be either to live in a particular community in the U. K. for a long while, or watch enumerable films portraying 'standard English' speech.
Whichever way you do it, you must be careful. Can you remember Dick van Dyke in the film 'Mary Poppins'. His English accent was mmmmmm!!!??? ( alright then--- laughable), and I have no doubt the same would apply to a British actor trying to portray an American.

It's not possible. I know Americans who have been here for 20 years+ and they still have accents. Just stick to your own. We'll know that you're American and your American friends will just think you're odd.
