Without this aid, we could only afford traditional mortage/bank financing for 2 years of school

Well that would depend on the type of school. A community college would easily be 100% covered. A private school, at a cost of 30,000 a year would only be covered by 3,500 in Stafford loans for a freshmen. That's 12%

This may help.
dependent freshmen are only eligible to borrow 3,500 a year.
sophmores are limited to 4,500
Jrs and srs are 5,500

Independent student limits are more. See publication attached.
