If you have a Costco near you, buy the Kirkland brand. Consumer Reports rated them the best. They're also less expensive than the major brands.

Everyone has different tastes in cookware, so there are many different choices you can make. If I were you, I'd go to target.com and look up the best sellers in cookware and see what brands other people are buying. You know that Target is probably going to have pretty decent prices and they have sales all the time.

I have been cooking for over 50 years. All my cookware is either cast iron or solid stainless steel. I stay from aluminum as it can cause Altzheimer's disease and I don't use silicone or any non-stick cookware as they can cause cancer. None of it is brand name cookware. Some of my cast iron cookware belonged to my great-grandmother.

I am a former chef so you can just listen to me and ignore all the others. Since I am a former chef, of course my opinion carries far FAR more authority than these other people.
Don't buy a set of anything. Buy piecemeal because different materials do different things better than others and different companies make these specific things better than others. One really good way to help you decide is to first spend a summer at garage and yard sales and auctions and by a piecemeal set of used stuff. Not only might you find a pan or skillet or griddle or whatever that you decide not to replace but then you are better educated about what works for you and what doesn't.
There. Don't you feel better now that you have unimpeachable PROFESSIONAL advice. My my, it's so hard being a former chef. But I guess that's the price we must pay for being former chefs. People rely on us. (Sigh.)

Calphalon is over rated. Go and look at your local department store. Pick a brand priced middle of the road and search reviews online. I do like Tfal and Farberware as the other user has said. Its not pricey either. The way you take care of it makes a big impression as well.Remember to use plastic utensils and not metal.
