My husband and I were planning a clam bake, but we had a family emergency and had to cancel.

The clams were purchased (little-necks) have been sitting in the fridge for a little over a week and half in a bucket of ice water.

I'd really hate to throw them out. All the clams are still closed tightly and smell fine.

I steamed a few to see if they would open and they opened completely after about 5-6 minutes.

Are these clams safe to eat?

Well... supposedly the clams are still alive since they were closed and opened up when you steamed them.

I would try to wash/soak and rinse a few times before cooking them to give them a chance to purge any waste built up over the past week.

After cooking, discard the one's that didn't open up.

believe me, you dont want to get food poisoning from clams!!!
I wouldnt eat them and I work at a raw bar, I called the kitchen mgr and he told me to tell you to toss them..... your better off buying new clams than getting sick or your guests sick!!
good luck!!!
