Thank God no-one was killed when your apartment burned. Thank God you had a place to sleep in the homeless shelter. Thank God you didn't die from the flu.Thank God that you live in a free country and have your health and freedom of choice to move forward in the face of adversity and re build a better life.
I believe you have been given a huge push toward something you have been avoiding. something ( GOD) is telling you, you have to leave the place you were living and working and move away to where your Heart is.
Do you know what I'm talking about? There is something you have been putting off for a long time, trying to ignore it. now you have no choice in the matter. the decision has been made for you. so pack your bags( if you have any left )and just GO ( I'm a bit Psychic so know what I'm talking about)
It is you, but you haven't realized it yet. hypothetically speaking of course.

I can think of a few things:
-Your apartment burned down without you inside it.
-You were not killed during the robbery.
-There was a homeless shelter to take you in.

But I don't think you're looking for an analysis of the scenario you set up. There is a much better answer to this than I can write. Your question was already asked by Job, and I recommend you read that book (http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/job/intro.htm). You should see parallels between your story and his.

If you'd like a more modern approach, I like Peter Kreeft's "Making Sense Out of Suffering". You can read an excerpt online for free: http://peterkreeft.com/topics/suffering.htm

For waking up and giving you another chance...a lot of people don't wake up in the morning. Life goes in cycles...good times are really good, bad time are really bad. I do think you are suppose to learn something out of each. So many people just fall apart when something bad happens and oh what's the use...the use is You're here for a reason...and you won't learn why until you realize He never dishes out more than you can take......

You would thank God for kicking the devil in his mouth proving that there is nothing the devil can do that God cannot restore double what the devil had stolen but if one blames God for something the devil had done, the devil just sits back and laughs while they cry and have a poor me party, So I had rather thank the Lord for I know that I came into the world with nothing but when I leave this world I leave it a King unto Christ! Thank God!

Pray 1st, then find a companion, hope I had insurance on the apartment, kick that homeless robber's ***, and then take some Nyquil. You have to take on everything that is thrown at you, that's just life.

That you are still alive and not suffering...someone else always has it worse. But also you have to thank God whether you are rich, poor, happy, sad, sick or healthy. You need God...God doesn't need you. Finally this life is temporary, therefore while you have it work for the afterlife...heaven.
