>Why is Religion so controversial?
Mostly because there are a lot of evil things done in the name of religion. Ignoring the fact that other people believe false things isn't so hard by itself, but it gets much harder when those other people are trying to harm you or take away your freedoms because of what they believe.
>Why can't we all just get along?
Well, we COULD, actually. It's just that some people don't want to. And some of those people don't want to because their giant imaginary friends told them not to.

I grew up in a Catholic Christian family and yes, I'm very happy to be part of it. I did attend a public high school and I couldn't express my religious beliefs. One time when I was talking about Saint Anthony of Padua and all of sudden one of the teacher aids said to me, "Alan, that's enough. No more talk about religion." After what she said to me, I made no comment and was a bit disturbed. Nowadays I work at a job agency. And there are some people who share a common Christian ground with me. But the rest who are close minded about it and probably don't want to hear about it. Like one time, I was on my lunch break and things were calm and quiet then all of sudden one of the job coaches asked me if I had my holy water. I said yes and they had sprinkle holy water on someone. I really didn't want to do it but I did and one of the job coaches wasn't really happy of what I did and spoke to me in a unkind way. I felt so discouraged and ashamed. When I got home, I couldn't get it out of my head. So I went to sleep and the next morning, no one remembered. Which was a good thing. So yes religion is a controversial subject but I cannot and will not back down from my faith. I will stand firm and be strong.

Because people want to make it so.
People and societies are used to being divided along tribal, ethnic, language lines and use any justification for their prejudice (which is all religion is, a justification it is not an actual root cause of division).
Those that claim offense to a religion or being offended by religion are just claiming different ways of justifiying their prejudice divisions. Because really most people and societies are still relatively primative in their views.

Religion is controversial because it is so personal. People are usually not offended by the religion itself, but rather because some people try to force it on them or try to convert them.

Religion is like politics, everyone wants to be right, everyone has their own thoughts, expressions, and beliefs, and everyone wants people to believe them. The difference is in religion there really is only one truth and people have to find it themselves. But I do want to point out that I am a Christian and Jesus teaches that HE is the way, the truth, and the light, and no-one comes to the father except through him, not by believing to worship on Sunday or Saturday, or being baptist or non-denominational. We are supposed to let go of the debatable matters and focus on our relationship with Christ.

Because religion isn't just a hobby, it's a lifestyle to most and when someone doesn't like their lifestyle they get angry. Also most every religion has rules and followers feel betrayed when their fellow men break those rules or disrepect their beliefs. Its sort of like if you were really in love with Jon Cusack and you just thought he was the sh*t and you'd seen every movie I'd been in and you were president of his fan club, and one day everyone decides to hate on John Cusack and ask that his movies never be shown on TV and every picture of him burned. It would make you upset, right? Of course it would...

Because it can't be just an opinion; it has to be a commitment pro or con. When Jesus said, eg, Repent or you will likewise perish, I can see the reaction, I don't believe --- or the reaction, I do believe. But I can't see 'Whatever !'. And the people who reject will necessarily end up disliking those who accept for the simple reason that there acceptance is affront to their rejection. I know this from experience. But I stick to my own experience. Don't anybody feel they have to contradict me. I'm not generalizing. I'm talking about MY friends and MY family.

Because every religion according to followers, is the only one true religion, and all other religions are false and lead you to some sort of damnation if you don't believe.
so when you figure out which religion is the one that actually gets you saved.... you have to let everyone else know, so that they can abandon their beliefs and adopt yours...
Oh and if they resist, then just force them to assimilate or die.
sound about right ?

People are offended at being wrong and things they don't know. Human nature is quick to defend its beliefs. I bet if some people were more honest on their opinions and statements and didn't depend on numbers to back them up, the world would go crazy.

Religion is controversial because it convinces people that their actions here should ONLY be made based on some so-called afterlife. This idea has produced MANY wars and death.
