I save wine labels and I steam them off. It preserves the label. So, if you are just looking to clean the glass and throw away the label then the previous poster is correct. In fact, once it is soaked, a scouring sponge works. Brillo works too if there is just small pieces left stuck on.

You can use Goo Gone or similar products but that's more expensive and more work than a soak. When I clean beer bottles for reuse, I put a quarter cup of bleach and 3/4 cup of TSP in a few gallons of warm or hot water and let the bottles soak overnight. The labels fall off (the metalicised ones may need help) and, after a quick swish of a bottle brush, the bottle is ready to go into the rinse-water.

I de-label a few dozen bottle every week for my winery. After a very lengthy thread regarding this exact question on http://www.homebrewtalk.com, the consensus there was that your best bet is a bucket of hot water and Oxyclean. Let the bottles soak for a couple hours, and the labels should float right off. If they don't come off immediately, just use a razor blade to scrape what residue may be left.

Soaking in water in good but sometimes there is still some sticky stuff. You can use Goo Gone to get that off.

1.Soak in hot, hot water with liquid dish soap.
2.Use rubbing alcohol on it. Soak cotton ball and saturate the label.
Those are the best two that I have tried and that have worked for me!

Soak them in a solution of vinegar (white is best) and hot water. If you need them off super fast, you can use rubbing alcohol.
