The school of hard knocks is a phrase used to describe learning through making the wrong decision and suffering the painful results. That teaches you that wasn't the right decision.

Sometimes a person is referred to as having graduated from the school of hardknocks which means they have survived great difficulties in life. I would take it as a compliment. It is a bit of an old-fashioned expression these days but still accurate and useful.

I'm sorry, but I'd have to tell the truth. I'd make it as hysterically funny as possible, too. Because I need a writing sample the first day of school to see where we are and where we need to go, I try to ask something they can really get emotional about: mad, glad, or sad, doesn't matter. This year I asked for a full account of the summer vacation they wish they'd had IF time and money had been no object.I wrote one, too.

It means learning something the hard way or by experience. When I told my dad that I learned from my mistakes, he said, "Well, you ought to be a damn genius by now."
