Diet is far more important than exercise, yes you can lose fat without exercising. However when you say severely, it scares me, one mistake people make is they don't eat enough. Proper diet is about only creating a slight calorie deficient, then it's about when you eat certain foods, what you eat, eating high thermogenic foods like protien and fiber, basically eating to keep the metabolism burning your intake.
A LOT of female models are in horrible shape, they don't exercise at all and just eat really healthy, but they also have genes =P

A while ago I had an eating disorder where I was only getting around 500 calories a day. I used to eat a lot, maybe 2500 calories a day, and I can tell you that losing 10 pounds in 2 weeks was like a breeze. I definitely am not suggesting eating only 500 calories a day, but yes, severely cutting back on the calories can make you lose weight, it just won't make you have a bangin' body that you get with lifting and running twice a week!

When you severely cut your calories, your body compensates by slowing your metabolism. First, it will shed water weight to slow down metabolic processes. Then it will start catabolizing your muscle tissue since the energy requirements for muscle are high. You'll start sleeping more to spend less time awake, and when you eat food, your body will try to convert it and store it as fat since you're starving.
Depending on how much you weigh, you can cut 1000 a day and lose 2 pounds a week. However, it's much healthier and you'll feel a lot better if you cut out 500 calories a day and EXERCISE! Lean mass (your muscle) is the key to long-term weight loss and extreme dieting will always decrease it.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.
The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.
Get started today!

Most likely, you will still lose weight. But if you have a lot of weight to lose and don't exercise, you will lose muscle tone in the process. If your goal is to look buff, you will have to commit to some type of physical activity. A rigorous walk every other day is great for toning as well as reaping cardiovascular benefits and clearing the mind. Beta endorphins are released when one is engaged in a form of exercising, which promote feelings of well-being......also known as "runner's high". What a great fringe benefit!

it all depends on your current level of fitness and your body fat %. exercise expedites weight loss along with providing numerous positive changes to the endocrine system. not quite sure why anyone would stop exercising, you can never be healthy if you are sedentary. no animal on this planet is designed to sedentary, there will be nothing but a negative effect on the health from such a lifestyle.
