I was planning on purchasing the 40GB version of the PS3 within the next couple of days. I was wondering how much could you save on this version. All I want to do is play games. Will 40GB be enough. I know it isn't BC either, so are their any other disadvantages? Thanks.

40GB is plenty of space for most users... after all, Sony did initially sell a 20GB version. The larger drives are useful if you want to think of the PS3 as a "media center" device, but if it's all about the games, it shouldn't be a big deal.

However, if it IS about the games, you do give up PS2 compatibility. The 40GB PS3 will play PS1 games, not PS2 games. The curious thing is that the 80GB PS3 leaves out the Emotion Engine and other PS2 hardware, yet it plays PS2 games in software just dandy. The 60GB and 20GB include this hardware. The 40GB system could run the same software emulation as the 80GB system, but Sony only sells it with the 80GB system... they're trying to create an artificial market separation here.

Other cost reductions... only 2 USB ports, and no flash memory port. Again, not a thing that's directly impacting game play, but just another thing to factor in to your decision. It does have the HDMI output.. some rumor sites claimed it didn't, but it's at best unethical to deliver any Blu-Ray player without HDMI, because it's possible (though not common) to author a Blu-Ray disc that only does high definition on the HDMI port under HDCP copy protection. Of course, if you have HDTV, HDMI delivers a shaper high-def display, but there's no worried about HD games not playing over component HD. Yet.

The 40gb is no different than the 60. I have the 40 and it plays old games. The graphics are great. It your looking to save some money and still get a PS3 this is definitely the way to go. Great purchase.!!!

PS if your looking for more USB ports they have adabters out that will allow for more ports. So don't let that stop you from getting it.

The 40 should be fine if all your worried about is hard-drive space. I've got a 20GB Xbox 360 hard-drive and have beaten 15 games and it still has 10GB left. If you're planning to download large amounts of content via the Playstation Store, you may want to look into a larger hard-drive, otherwise, I think you'll be fine with the 40.

However the 40 does not include an HDMI port, so it will spit out (arguably) lower quality picture and sound.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
