1 each night + the servant - never blow them out allow them to burn (attended of course) until they burn away completely. To keep a safe candle place Menorah on a glass or metal tray (no cloth or plastic) and use a cooking spray or coat it with olive oil to easily remove any candle drips. BTW they are lit Right to Left. Good Luck!

candles are placed in the menorah from right to left but are lit from left to right for eight nights, the candles they sell usually burn for half an hour, enough time to meditate and pray...

It is correct that the candles are lit right to left, but they are placed in the menorah left to right.
