I wouldn't put alot of stock in the impressions of the Church you get here from the R&S whackjobs. It in no way represents any slice of reality.

I was born and raised Jewish, but two of my sisters married Mormon husbands, and, as a result, I have studied the religion extensively. I've engaged those who think Mormons worship the devil, and I've actually gone to Mormon church services. From all I've studied and experienced I have come to one conclusion ... Mormons are better "Christians" than most Christians.
Firstly, the name of the Church isn't the Mormon Church, or the Church of Mormon ... it is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That should tell you something right there ... They believe in standard Christian dogmas; Jesus is the Messiah and son of God, the Bible is the word of God, Baptism, the taking of communion, etc ...
Mormons (in my experience) are extremely moral and display above-average character. They don't drink or smoke, and it's only once in a blue moon you hear one swear or talk about something dirty. In general they practice what they preach, and don't tend to be holier-than-thou or arrogantly self righteous (like most Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians I've met over the years).
About the only two major reasons I've found over the years for why most Christians don't like Mormons are; 1) the Book of Mormon, and 2) Mormon Temples are off limits to non-members. As for the first reason ... Christians consider another book of scripture other than the Bible to be heretical, but I've never found one single person who ever criticized the Book of Mormon who ever read it from cover to cover. If you read it it doesn't say anything evil or that different from the Bible. In fact, the message is about the same, only they claim it happened in the Americas and not in the Middle East. As for the temples being off limits to non-members ... don't other churches do the same thing (to one extent or the other). I'm pretty sure the inner workings of the Catholic Church's hierarchy are off-limits to even regular members. And the same can be said for other Protestant sects as well. Beyond the fact most Christians hold the Jewish Temple of Solomon as a key religious dogma, but seem to overlook the fact that only Jews could enter it ... isn't that the exact same thing the Mormons do? Its okay for the Biblical Jews to do it, but its not okay for modern-day Mormons to do the same thing ...
Another thing I always hear from the anti-Mormon camp is how so many Mormon beliefs are ridiculous -- Joseph Smith and the Brass Plates, God once being mortal, "magic underwear," etc ... Call me crazy, but if you believe that a man walked on water, a bunch of people destroyed a city by yelling really loud, a prophet spent three days inside a fish's stomach and then was spit up on dry ground, and all other simply ridiculous stories then you really can't call anyone else's beliefs ridiculous.
How can you say there's no question whatsoever that Moses could part an entire sea and then have his people walk across it, and say that it is impossible that an Angel can appear to a young boy named Joseph Smith in New York? Somewhat hypocritical if you really look at it objectively.
Most Christians have no problem whatsoever believing that a woman became pregnant with the son of God without having sex, but if a woman today came up to one of those same Christians and said they had just immaculately conceived a child you'd say it was impossible. How does that work?
99% of the stuff I hear about Mormons from non-Mormons reminds of things I've heard said about Jews my entire life. They are completely false, bigoted, and without any kind of rational support.
A lot of people hate Mormons ... just like a lot of people hate Jews.

first of all, that's not a cult! Mormons do no longer worship Joseph Smith, nor are their undies "magic". they do no longer prepare polygamy. They positioned kinfolk first. They use the KJV Bible *and* The e book of Mormon jointly. they have self assurance that Jesus replaced into born of a virgin, died for his or her sins, and arose 3 days later. they don't have self assurance in a "distinctive" Jesus. Mormons are between countless the main certainly being concerned human beings I even have ever met.

personally, i feel as most mormons (not all) are respectful, and kind. Mormonism teaches good family values, and respect of elders in the community, and that is great as most in our world have a lack of repspect for those older than they as well as haven't a clue on what it means to be a family.
In that respect, i would have to say, that that is a benefit and a plus to the Mormon Church.
BUT, as a Christian, my main objection to Mormonism is not a matter of ethics (as most mormons are ethical) but a matter of doctrinal issues. Mormonisim is not a Christian Denomination of Church, (insofar as Presbetyrians, Methodists, Baptists, Assemblies of God etc) are denominations of the same church, but [mormonism] is a seperate religion. Just because Jesus Christ is mentioned does not make it a Christian Religion.
My view on this is, the foundations of Christian Doctrines are essential to the longjevity of the church. They are set in place as foundations to the faith, and must be maintained in integrity and defended as to protect the Church from heresies.
I have nothing against Mormons (personally or in general) and hold no grudge against the LDS. BUT, my heart is more so sorrowful for them, as what a person believes about the Son of God (Jesus Christ) very much determines his or her eternal destiny. Because Mormonism rejects all of the foundational doctrines that make a Christain Chruch what it is, yet preach Jesus (but not as we do) that they have ' a form of godliness but denying it's power' (2 Tim 3:5).
I am more or less disturbed by the teachings, yet from a standpoint of compassion, and empathy. I feel very badly for the LDS congregants, as they spend their entire lives believing wrongly about God, yet think they have the 'true gospel' which they do not; and though they preach a 'form' of Jesus, because the beliefs are incorrect, will spend an eternity seperated from the presence of God. There is nothing more sad than that. ♥
*edit* blursd2: (half of the extended family is Jewish); and while i agree with you that mormons are good people; i tend to disagree with you on your statement about "dogmas". Mormonism teaches that Jesus Christ is not God, And that is the basis of christianity; therefore, they cannot be considered a christian church. They do not teach christain dogmas at all. If you were raised Jewish, then you would be familiar with the Shema. Mormonism declares that God is not One, but three; that is not only in contradiction to Judiasm, but also Christianity. Christianity teaches the exact same things about God as Judiasm (with the exception that Jewish people reject Christ as Messiah, christains embrace him). From Textual evidences (scriptures) does not Judiasm teach that the Messiah is/was to be God-Eternal incarnate? Therefore how can you claim that LDS teaches the same as Judiasm in regards to Messiah? It does not. If you have been to Mormon Church services, then you would know that Mormonism teaches Jesus is 'a' God, and not 'the' God, (which is polytheism, not monotheism) AND that also it is taught that YHWH and Elohim are TWO SEPERATE people, NOT the SAME GOD as Judiasm declares. Therefore, you must not know much about Christianity in general to make that assumption; even so, being raised Jewish, you should see the error.

I think most people think Mormonism is a little strange. Personally I think there are a lot of good people who are mormons, and I've had a lot of mormon friends, and dated one for about a year, but a lot of the teachings blatantly contradict logic. Other than that I have no problem with them.

I have studied mormonism alot, right along with other cults. I think that the mormon church deliberatly hides embarrassing things in the LDS vault, and goes out of its' way to cover up church history and early church leaders beliefs. I think your average mormon has no idea about most of the church's history, what goes on in temples, and even about Joseph Smith himself. If the leaders have nothing to hide, they should open their vault and be honest about Joseph Smith and what he really believed. Any question about doctrine and church history is immediately brushed aside as an "attack" on their faith. I think every member of the church should study for themselves the history and beliefs of their leaders and prophets, anyone after studying still willing to believe it, I respect that, but it would be shocking. If anyone would like to have an open and honest dialogue about the history of the LDS church I am all for that. By the way, I love Jesus.

Most Christians view it as a cult, somewhat. Its lame of them. They should respect the Mormons more. Judge not, right?
Besides, in the world of "logic prevails all" the mormons (at least from what my mormon friend says) are WAY more logical than the Catholics and non-denominational Christians in this country. I like the idea of the outer darkness over hell. It is much more humane.

Well, I'm Mormon, so I can tell you what I see everyday. We are hard working, law abiding citizens. We care about our families, and believe that families come first. We even take one night a week to spend with our families. We try to be honest, courteous to others and respect everyones right to believe as they will.
You will probably get a lot of bad comments on here about us, and most of those will be wrong. If you want info about us, let me know. I'll be glad to answer questions you have.

Well, most people I know think that the mormons are a bunch of crazies. Because they think that jesus was born in like, missouri or something. I heard they also think that the second coming of jesus will be in america. Which is sort of odd.
