the only issue I am worried about is weight gain and lack of a sex drive....has anyone experienced these as the major side effect?

I am not going on Prozac for depression or thoughts of suicide, I am only going on it for my OCD, and it is not a heavy case of OCD. I am 5 foot 2, and 110 pounds, i do not need diet, I excercise everyday...so please don't take this question as a suicide one, I am seeing a therapist and I do go to Massage Therapy.

Depression and anxiety are real problems and deserve real attention. Treatment can be through medications or therapy.

Prozac is a very affordable medication for these problems. It is effective, and the side effects are generally small. I would suggest you try the medication and give it a few weeks. If the side effects are terrible, then stop the medication and call the doctor.

Personally I would really consider all the effects even the more rare like horrifying dreams, suicidal thoughts and convulsions. I know your Dr recommended it but there are other non medical options - have you tried diet and massage therapy? Pills can cause permanent problems when all you need is a little help to get over a short term one. I have seen the effects of Prozac and it can be both good and devastating. I encourage you to look at alternative therapies and only use chemicals as a last effort. Good Luck!

I hate prozac. I used to work at a mental health place. The ONLY way our psychiatrist would use prozac on a patient was if they'd been on it in the past, liked it, and asked him to do it. the stuff was put on the market before you were born, sweetie. it was THE FIRST SSRI. It also causes frequent problems like your cousin had because it's NOT INDICATED FOR CHILDREN. This is where you have to be decisive. If you take it, take it. Don't take it for a few days and second guess yourself. Then, it'll really mess you up for sure. If you are NOT going to take it, tell your mom and dad. Tell them you will take something, but that you looked it up and prozac can cause suicidal tendancies in children and teens. (which it can) and that you want something else. Cymbalta and lexipro are good for anxiety. I'm not sure if they're indicated for teens though. There are newer meds out there tho that have fewer side effects. They can totally accurately diagnose anxiety in one visit, hon. I had my first panic attack at 14 or 15. It does make you feel like your chest is gonna explode or something. People mistake it for chest pains because they feel like they're anxious because their chest hurts, not that they were anxious and the pain came AFTER the anxiety.

you're not worried about being addicted to it, and that your brain will never be able to make happy chemicals on it's own ever again? that's what these drugs do to you.

excercise is as effective as anti-depressants, but gyms don't send drug-reps to shrinks about it! Especially cardio (like jogging or aerobics) done in groups is most effective. unless you're in danger of killing yourslelf this very week, try excercise. plz.
