If it is a WW 2 manufactured carbine the barrel will have a date stamped into it just behind the front sight; such as 11-43; meaning November, 1943; with a flaming bomb ordnance insignia. If it doesn't, then it most likely is not a military issue carbine. If it does and you want to locate the manufacturer's marking, you must look behind the rear sight. The late war sights nearly obscure the markings but you might be able to make out:
Inland, or Rock-Ola; or Winchester ; or Saginaw; or National Postal Meter , or Quality Hardware; or IBM

If its marked anywhere else like Plainfield or Universal it is NOT a military issue carbine.

Without a better description I can't help you. Look at the receiver. What information is stamped there? What finish does the weapon have? Is it phosphate (a dull gray-olive green) or is it a shiny blue finish?

A genuine G.I carbine will have the following stamped on the top of the receiver just behind the hand guard:

U.S. CARBINE
CAL .30 M1

Several other companies manufactured M1's including Universal Firearms in Hialeah Florida. Their weapons are marked as follows:

UNIVERSAL
HIALEAH FLA.
CAL .30 M1
PAT. 3382766

Let me know if I can be of further help identifying your carbine. I have an extensive weapons collection and library.

Who manufactured it? It should be engraved onto the back-top of the receiver just behind the rear sight......It could be a M1 Carbine or Commercially made after WWII..(Plainfield or Universal brand)

NOTE* The Barrel stamp will only tell you who made the barrel. It will NOT tell you who made the Carbine itself.....

There were (10) major manufacturers that made M-1 Carbines during WWII
Underwood,S.G. Saginaw,Quality Hardware,National Postal Meter,IBM, Standard Products,Inland,S.G. Grand Rapids,Winchester, Irvin Pederson and Rockola
