I've noticed recently that my upload bandwidth is always at its maximum, even when I'm not downloading anything. Browsing speed has suffered as if the computer is uploading something all the time.

I haven't installed any new software and when trying to restore my PC to an earlier time, I find that all my restore points are gone!

Could it be some trojan or worm? I'm using McAfee total protection and it didn't detect anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Spyware trojan perhaps:

No antivirus or antispyware protection is perfect but a good mixture of the two will help you clean your system and hopefully keep it clean.

First of all update and run your own anti virus & anti spyware applications.

Next download, update and run a full scan using the following product:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
SuperAntiSpyware will remove the majority of difficult Trojans not just the easy ones.

If possible it is recommended that you load the application in normal mode but run it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. However, if you are badly infected you might need to run SuperAntiSpyware more than once to help clean your system. If the only infections now being shown are in System Restore, once you are completely satisfied that you can boot normally, you can either delete the infected restore points manually, or temporarily turn off System Restore.

In addition I suggest you download, update & run Avira. Unlike a lot of the free antivirus applications this will give you real time protection and is very quick to load at boot up.

Assuming you have some real awkward infections and the suggestions above failed to finally clean your system I suggest you download a Smitfraud removal program from:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/desktop_security/smitfraudfix.cfm
Again if possible run in Safe Mode.

Be advised that some infections will corrupt or disable your resident security products so for completeness I have listed a few online scans that may help you:
Norton - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/defau...
Panda - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/Ac...
Trend - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Good luck & safe surfing.

Most likely spyware. I had norton in my computer for a long time and then started to notice my upload packet quantity was the same as my download quantity, which isn't right when you're just surfing. Turns out Norton is great for stoping viruses but missed 5 spyware programs, at least that I could find.
The recommendation of getting spyware sweeper software in addition to your anti-virus software is a good one. Or switch OS to Mac or Linux.
The latest spyware programs have names that are very similar to your normal programs like IEXPLORER.EXE. Even when norton flagged this program as attempting to connect to a DNS server I said OK because I thought it was IEXPLORE.EXE which is the normal internet explorer program.

By your computer uploading all the time then you may have a infection that is doing that. It could be a virus or spyware. Below are some suggestion to clean it up and make it run faster.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/...... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run SuperAntiSpyware---http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSp...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html....
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Ccleaner is a registry cleaner that will make your system run faster. It also cleans traces of your online activities.

Download, update and run--http://www.ccleaner.com

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it ever again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.download.com/SG-TCP-Optimizer...

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

When I go hit by Beagle, a worm, my computer acted the same. I was running an updated Norton at the time, but they hadn't put the patch out until 4 hours after I was hit. Beagal took control of my Anti-Virus program.

I went here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I ran their Web bases anti-virus. They shut it down and gave me instructions on the parts they could not remove.

Try scanning with another anti-spyware scanner, this is the most likely problem. If you have a wireless router, and it is not secured someone else could be using it. If so you must secure it for your own protection.
