It depends on the office, but I would try to avoid it.
People who don't drink could be offended. Also, the boss might not appreciate you bringing alcohol into the workplace, even if it's not meant to be consumed there.

I'm with 70's Virgo--it's better to be safe than sorry, and for a number of reasons. My office culture would frown on such a gift, but I live in the Bible belt. I wouldn't mind personally receiving a bottle of wine, but I'd hate to see a recovering alcoholic get one, especially this time of year. I'd also hate to see someone who didn't drink for religious reasons, or a diabetic get a gift they couldn't/wouldn't use.

If you know who the recipient is, and know that s/he would appreciate it, that's one thing. If it's a round-robin kind of thing, then it'd be better to choose something else.

No. Not everyone drinks. Someone might be underage. Someone could be a recovering alcoholic. That would be like giving a carton of cigarettes.
Now if you have a certain person to buy for and you know they like wine it would be OK. But I wouldn't want to receive it even then. It would give the impression that I'm a lush.

It is so appropriate! I live in the Napa Valley and all they give is wine. Just make sure the person who you are giving it to drinks wine. Also try to find out if they like red or white better.

It seems that's all anyone gives at my husband's party, and I hate it! We don't really drink wine, and it's kind of annoying. Ahhh, another bottle of merlot... gee thanks. I only have 10 at home full of dust. I'm thinking of taking the bottle we got last year for them to drink this year! If it's appropriate or not depends on your office and the people.

Although I wouldn't mine receiving it, I don't think its an appropriate gift exchange for the office. Better safe then sorry ... for all different kinds of reasons.

It depends on who do you want to give the wine. If the person is wine lover he would appreciate your gift. If not he would just give your gift to other people.

Katie is right. You'll have to make this decision on your own since none of us know the temperament of your office. If it's a secret Santa sort of thing, then I would say "no" because you don't know in advance who will be receiving the gift.

Modern Pimps advocate responsible drinking only.

I wouldn't do it for an exchange that took place in the office, but I might for one that took place off site. The other thing to look at is how conservative is the culture at your office, do you think other people there would object?

No, I would not recommend it. I would only give that to someone I knew really well. Some people who have had problems with achol in the past might take the gift the wrong way and you might end up in HR.
