Global Warming is a reference to climate change, but the change is that the earth is warming. There is a great divide between scientist as to what is causing global warming. Some scientists say it is man-made. Others are saying it is a natural cycle. Scientists who say that the Global Warming is man-made refer to global warming as Anthropogenic global warming. Meaning the Co2 spewing from our SUV's and coal burning industries are causing this warming to happen. See our atmosphere is made up of several gases and one of these gases is Co2. It traps heat in and keeps our planet relatively warm. Without Co2 our global mean temp would be about 18 degrees Celsius cooler than it is now which means the earth would be uninhabitable. So they say the excess Co2 in the atmosphere that's being released from man is causing the earth to warm more. Easy to understand more Co2 more heat. Then you have the skeptics or man-made global warming doubters who say the sun has a lot to do with the recent and past warming. They say that we do not fully understand the role of Co2 in the atmosphere so should not go taxing people until we fully understand the science. Hope this helps, but all in all global warming is basically climate change but the change is warming. Global cooling would be climate change but the change is that the globe is cooling.

Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.
It won't be a Hollywood movie style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

An increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures.
However do keep in mind that it is natural and isn't all gore has cracked it up to be. A good example of this is the land mass the use to connect Alaska to Russia. Its gone and has been gone for a really long time. Which proves that global warming has been around for awhile.
And if you dig outside your text I'm sure you will see that there are a lot of theories on both sides of the fence, but it has been proven that the earth's temperatures have risen and fell periodically throughout time.

This isn't new. Al Gore was vice president for 8 years, why didn't we hear about it then? Global warming is pretty much what it says. The earth is getting warmer(for many different reasons-pollution, etc) and the polar ice caps are in danger of melting.
