We've all seen it a million times on YA..."I want a dog that never sheds, never barks, will like living in my closet-sized apartment, that I'll never have to clean up after, that will never get sick (because I don't have any money and I'm too lazy or stupid to take it to the vet), and poops rainbows and butterflies."

Honestly, what is the deal with this? Pets are luxuries, not necessities...if you don't have the time, money, and energy to deal with them, don't! There's no such thing as an "easy" dog, I have no idea where people are getting this idea!

It makes me sad because then you see the dog at the end of a chain in someone's back yard because it didn't meet the owner's expectations. Most of the dogs I take in were abandoned, neglected or unwanted by someone.

You are so right. And you can see these situations every day, every time. It pisses me off the stupid people that gets a supposed "pet" and then starts complaining about it "ah, this dog/cat/bird/hamster/tortoise/whatever is so stupid, it won't do anything, it just lays down and eats all day". And what do you expect it to do? To dress like a clown and dance and make special tricks for you? Yeah it's very cool if they do so but come on, it is an animal, you idiot. And you are supposed to keep it as a pet, a company for you, not a toy or something for when you are bored. If you are bored and your pet does not satisfy you because you feel it is not intelligent enough to do so, then go get a videogame or something, not a pet. And if you have such higher expectations about animals, then reconsider when you are gonna adopt a pet if you are gonna treat it like s*hit later. Some people really need to take a deep look at themselves in the mirror.

Personally, I don't think these people realize that any dog, especially a pup, is going to be a challenge at first. Then, it kills me how people complain, but will not take their dog to behavior classes. Because of some sorry excuse like they don't have the money. Petsmart offers doggy behavior classes for $100, money back guarantee. To me, if you adopt a pet, you should include extra cost with the adoption price. If you don't have the money, wait and save a little.

Well, they have been living in the fairy tale of their little world. The best type of pet they should have is stuffed animals since they don't want to deal with training, going to bathroom, shedding and sickness. I believe a lot of them are first time dog owners. I don't understand one thing is before they bring a dog home, why don't they do enough research? That really bothers me.

AMEN!!!!
The other day, someone was looking at my foster pups, to maybe adopt one, and he looked at one puppy, and said and i quote " Mannnn, if you piss in my house, your a$$ is out!"
The puppies are 9 weeks old!!!!! Needless to say, he didn't get one.
A neighbor's dog got run over, and they were so shocked. I asked why they didn't keep him inside(they let him roam outside) and they said "well, he keeps trying to eat food off the counter". *sigh* training anyone, crate, no, we can't do that???
It's not even that they expect too much, we all want the ideal dog. It is that, even after countless people give the same advice, they still won't take it.
My professor bought this silly designer dog, refuses to crate her, refuses to take her outside to poop(lives in an apartment), refuses to walk her, and wants to give her up because she is just too much work with her having accidents, and chewing on things......ya think????She asks me and others all the time what she should do, but she won't do any of it! These people make me want to scream.

You made me laugh - I feel the same way about these questions. I now skip the "I want a small dog that doesn't shed, doesn't bark, easy to train, easy to housetrain, doesn't need much exercise, will get long well with a two-year old and can stay home alone all day long while are at work" questions. They don't like my answers anyway.

Hahahaha, poops rainbows. With some of the neighbors I have have with dogs (alright, everyone I have known with dogs) they all think they are going to be perfect with a small amount of training. Ya right. Starting to think the ones that know better don't have dogs.

They are ignorant, ditzy, clueless, off in lala land, and think they are at the center of the universe. I know people who have done this and the dog pays the price usually unless the people wise up. I have a dog and 2 cats. It is a lot of work and a bit expensive. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I love them. They make me happy.

Like Who? Cesar " The Dog Whisperer" I'm surprised he doesn't have those dogs doing his daily errands, any pet needs care, I've decided most people can't even take care of them selves in many areas, much less to take care of of any other life form including a simple plant.

AMEN!!!

I really think its a combination of Walt Disney and a society that has not taught people about personal responsibility and discipline. Too many people want what they want but don't want to do any work to get it.... which *I* believe is a product of an eductional system that hands out participation ribbons rather than actually having a winner.
