I never noticed them because I don't have a mirror in my house. But at the office, sunlight wa coming in and I could see the details of my tongue, it freaked my right out, I thought I had cancer. I'm a heavy smoker.

I think you are referring to the circumvallate papillae, eight to twelve dome-shaped structures that go from each side to the midline of the tongue, forming an inverted VEE. They are probably specialized taste buds, and everyone has them.

Your dentist should be able to differentiate between normal anatomy and cancer of the mouth. You can easily check out other persons tongues.

probably not cancer, due to the location. Oral cancer usually is on the side or under the tongue. Greydoc is most probably right. Circumvallae papillae.

do you chew or sniff tobacco? if u do , there is a good chance that its cancer,, go to the doctor to find out for sure.
