I have a a bullmastiff.

We were out in the yard, and a strange man walked up to the fence, and my bullmastiff hid........and was very quiet. up until the man cut open the lock on our 6 foot fence.... and tried to steal a little shiz tzu that is a champion dog, then the bullmastiff came out of no where and knocked him down and held him down without mauling, until the cops came.

Was I fearful? No, Because I knew my bullie would protect me. As for the shiz tzu, he could not stop barking at the theif.

I have 2 big German Shepherds - male 103 lbs and a female around 85 lbs. They are both wonderful watch dogs in they they let me know when ANYONE AT ALL IS IN THE ALLEY OR WALKING NEAR THE HOUSE. I personally like that they make alot of noise and I think that their noise deters people from at least coming near my house!!!!
As far as a guard dog - they can act like thay will do some damage - but I hope that push never comes to shove if you know what I mean.

Well from what I learnt from another member is she is not a guard dog she is a watch dog. I always have called her a guard dog but now I realise that she is in fact a watch dog.
She is excellent, she barks at any intruder but she does not bark unnecessarily. She alerts me to any thing out of the ordinary. I believe she would protect all members of our family if the need arose. I don't think she would bite I think she would knock someone down and hold them there with her face in theirs until I came out, well I hope anyway.

Depending on which way you look at it from, my dog is either great or completely inept. He barks, growls, lunges and snaps. He is a liability and someone could very well end up seriously hurt because of him. Therefore I am engaged in training him NOT to act with the inappropriate behaviors.

add: 19th Nervous Breakdown- my boss's tabby kitten (Tiger) will attack stray dogs, strange people and other cats who come in the yard. He also accompanies my dog and I on walks and attacks any dog he thinks is threatening me and my dog. He's probably about 15 pounds and he's not a year old yet but he's my attack cat.:D

I have two RR and they are good gaurd dogs or would be if i lived in th city. They both bark loudly when someone is walking past or coming in etc. My ***** would bite if she was provoked even slitly so I extend the hight of our fence - i would be devistated if i have to put her down for biting. My dog is only 18mths and he barks but only because my ***** does he doesn't really know why hes doing it - hes not very bright but I love him anyway.

Anyone who knocks on the door, he's right there barking until he sees who it is and if they're familiar. He's especially cautious of men. Once an old man tried to give him a dog treat when we were on a walk. My dog he got all tensed up and stood in between me and the man and made this shrill sound like Chewbacca until the man walked away. He makes that sound a lot when he's trying to get attention, like if he's waiting to come in the back door or wants to come in my room. He sleeps beside my bed too, facing the door. If anyone sits near me he jumps in the middle, he always tries to push my bf away too. He's only 40 lbs but he makes up for it in determination and awareness.

I have 3 dogs and I would say the mutt is the best guard dog. He is a golden retriever / shepard mix. He wouldn't attack or bite anyone unless they were hurting me. He would bark and growl and hopefully scare someone away. I have always had blond hair but last winter I had it dyed a dark brown. The first time I came home, I was really scared because he wouldn't stop barking and growling. I had to bend down and repeat his name a few times to get him to recognize me.

My dog (Boston Terrier) is a horrible guard dog. He never barks, even when someone comes to the door. If a person broke into my home wearing a ski mask carrying a knife, my dog would still cover them with kisses.
