One of the definitions for talking is

"To convey one's thoughts in a way other than by spoken words"

Another is

"An exchange of thoughts, ideas or opinions"

So yes, it is talking

It's not talking in the traditional sense, which would require words to come out of your mouth. However, it is instant communication (there's a reason they call it internet chat) and can be considered talking, even though no actual speech takes place.

I would say that with today's means of communicating with each other by way of instant messages and text messaging it is the same as talking.... you are carrying on an on-line conversation and part of the definition of talking is an exchange of ideas via conversation.

when a deaf person uses sign language they are talking with their hands... when you are typing back and forth you are talking with your fingers.....

So I have to agree with your teacher.

You're communicating with someone and you're taking up time when you should be focusing on school. If you were trying to explain something to someone and they ignored you and started chatting with someone online, you would think that rude, it's the same thing for your teacher. Her job is to teach, your job is to listen and try to learn from her.

It's a form of communication, when you were supposed to be attentive in clase. Teacher is correct. My guess is that the school also has a policy saying that you are not allowed to use the computers for messaging.

You're not talking as in the act of vocalizing with another person who is doing the same...but you are conversing in a written manner that could be construed as "talking"...especially if you're supposed to be paying attention in class...

Sorry - It is the same as communicating so I agree with your teacher - you were talking. The reality is you weren't participating in class so you were in the wrong.
