My father is a long time crack cocaine user and has been sick with 2 heart attacks within the last 3 months. I am his power of attorney and am having problems dealing with a situation.

He is in a retirement home and has been free from drugs the past 3 months. He recently obtained a bank card to our joint account and withdrew funds for drug use (Saturday). Since then I have been unable to contact him as he has been in and out of the retirement home and they cannot track him there. I need to have an evaluation done at the local hospital concerning his mental health. His family doctor secretary recommended I bring him to the hospital for the evaluation, though I cannot locate my father. He has been calling me saying he is not taking his meds and is going to get sick. How can I get him to the hospital, can the police help me? I don’t know what to do or what step to take.

I have already transferred the remaining funds into my personal account to which he has no access. I'm so concerned though for his health, and mine. I think he is manic depressive or something. He is calling and threatening taking me off as power of attorney and commiting suicide. It is really scary. I don't understand how they want me to be responsible for taking him to the hospital while he is like this.

He has been a heavy crack user since the early 70's. He has been to many rehab centres and has relapsed each time. But, I am conviced the heavy drug use has done something to his brain, or perhaps as I mentioned before he may have some disorder. His moods swings are unpredicable and offensive.

Since Sunday I believe he is off the drugs since he had no access to the cash. But, he is still calling me with the threats.

The first thing to do is get his bank card stopped. Then before calling the police see if there is any other way to track him down. Remember he has been using, but that his life is more important then keeping him out of jail..it sounds like he needs to be committed to a rehab live in program or something like it. Remember that this is a hard time for him and if he isn't ready to quit that no amount of rehab will help, that doesn't mean he should stop trying ...fake it till you make it, Give him as much support as possible ,addiction can be broken ....i know I made it But it was only with the help of my family and with there love ...i quit for them at first , then i quit for myself Have him find his higher power....may God be with you and may you find him soon...please let me know the outcome.

adddicts are great manipulators.......Don't let him get to you, you have done the best that you can and now you have to go the tough love direction....try to stay strong and don't give in. The more ways we have of working you is thru guilt .....his failures are not your problem...

Boy that's hard.

First, you'll need to talk with the bank about changing the bank account so he can't get money any more. Barring that, set up an account that he CAN'T access and put your money in there.

I don't know if the police can help you or not- but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Maybe they'll let you fill out a missing persons report.

Do you have any friends that your dad might talk with? From what you say, his life is at risk.

Good luck!

I agree with not letting him get access to the money. You could call the police and tell that he is a danger to himself, although he might get busted if he has drugs on him... but it also could save his life.
Could you call the doctor that is going to do the screening for help?

You need to call the POLICE and FILE CHARGES AGAINST HIM!!!!!! He stole money from you!!! Of course the police can help you get him arrested and get him help!!!

Yes, he's your father but he is either mentally ill or doesn't give a F**K about you. If he's arrested, then he can get help.
