Lincolnshire used to be one of the richest counties in the country, based mostly on wool. It was natural to build the best churches they could, and since there was plenty of money, they spared no expense.
The diocese of Lincoln extended a long way south, as far as where the M4 now is.

Only a guess here, but maybe its because Lincolnshire is so flat that having a spire made it easy to see where the Church is. Most religious buildings all over the world seem to be built high so that they are nearer to God.....so maybe that is the reason....but that is only a guess.
