Jesus did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill the law. The law is still in effect for those who do not know Christ. For those who have accepted His sacrifice, they are no longer in bondage to the law but are under grace (having the "unmerited favor" of God). It is not something we earn but a gift given to us by God.

It Is Finished -- meant that the plan of Salvation was now in place- it meant that there no longer had to be a sacrificial lamb--Jesus was that lamb- It meant that no one needed to go to a priest for forgiveness only to Jesus-
A man was initially set as the high priest --but the evils of power went to the mans head & he defiled God's temple & laws. Jesus came here to show us (remind us) that God WAS a God of love not the tyrant that the priest lead people to believe.. They had even made God's 10 commandments a burden --in the new testament Jesus repeatedly would remind the priests about what the true meanings of the commandments were.. and how they made the commandments seem impossible to follow-- he also reminded them we're to follow them out of the love we have for God. The laws done away with were the ceremonial laws (sacrificing animals,etc)...NOT Gods law. All 10 Commandments of God's -- still stand today. If they didn't stand---what exactly would we be judged by on Judgement Day??

Jesus fulfilled the law. He didn't do away with it. They were God's laws. God is perfect and doesn't change. By keeping faith in Him we also uphold and fulfill the law.
Jesus said that "all the law and the prophets" were based on the law of love (for God and fellow man). Think about the Ten Commandments. Four were directly related to love of God and the rest were related to love for mankind (read them and compare them to Matthew 22:36-40). There were numerous other laws that also accompanied them. These are all God's law.
The law is instrumental in teaching us a lesson in love, the seriousness of sin, a standard to uphold, and the 'shadow' (prophetic pointer) of the substance to come which is Jesus. The commandments are our instructions for a better life and represent God's loving (non murdering, stealing, lying) character.
Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law. He was the sin offering. The spotless (sinless, blameless) Passover lamb sacrifice. No longer was it a requirement for man to observe the law by his own works and unsuccessful attempt. Man could not keep the law perfectly; therefore the law could not justify man in God's presence. When Jesus fulfilled its requirement God could see this sacrifice to fully cover our debt (death - wager of sin) instead of our imperfections. Ceasing from our own works, we find also our Sabbath rest in Him.
God does not go back on His word. He said the wager for sin is death and He meant it. Even if it meant being paid in full by the Son. It would be paid. We owe Him our loving faith. That is what is required now of us for His gift of salvation through His atonement. He had reconciled us back to the eternal Father - The Most High God.

Good one. Most think that, but how can they be done away with when the God of Israel said remember my laws commandments, judgements, statues, forever?? See,folks need to see that HE never changed, never will although the world has.See,HE is not of this world..In the NT they will have u believe the laws are done away with,old..but the OT is the original hebrew language, the language spoken by the first folks on earth, writings found with a word from the God of Israel to HIS chosen people, those who obey HIS word and live in them..Now if u dont trust in that or HIM,then like most u will believe JC and think the God of Israel, who is the creator,HIS laws are no more, and thats the worst think u could think, cause that is leading u astray..U know that the laws are still intact when u study your OT..There are laws, etc,HIS chosen people are to follow, just like there are manmade laws for us to follow. And if u dont follow the manmade laws, there are consequences, eventually.Same with the God of Israel..The last thing HE said before the NT is remember the laws etc,of my servant Moses. Now why would HE state that in the last book of the OT if it meant nothing? It may mean nothing to those who are not HIS chosen, but to HIS chosen it says alot..He also talks about what will happen to those who pick and choose which of HIS commandments they will keep..Just read the OT a little.Shalom

We know because of what he said that he came to fulfill the law. He stated there are two commandments that encorporate all of the commandments. Love your God, and Love your neighbor as yourself. He stated that he brought the new law to end the old. The new law is Love, and if you do that you will not be inclined to Kill, Lie, Steal, Rape, etc. You honour God by loving because love is of God and can only happen through God.
The old laws were much more absolute as a written legal system that ended up stretching far past just Ten Commandments. They involved things about bathing and eating. Christ brought forth the evolution from narrow mindedness. In the new way, all people were to be part of the family of God, not just the Jews.
In the new way everything is clean to those that are clean. All things are dirty to those that are dirty. All that is done without Faith is sin. Cast not a stumbling block upon your brother. If his conscience is hurt by you eating meat around him, for example, don't eat meat around him. The new law of love brings forth common sense.
It is stated that the law was meant for those that need it.
When you are guided by Love, there is no need for Law.
In this sense Love is the law and replaces the law.
The old laws brought forth lip service, and public displays of legalism. They created superficiality. To perform these actions by following the Law did not cause one to Love.
Love has to come naturally from the heart, given to us freely by God through his spirit that lives in us. Love.

Maybe you misunderstand. According to the gospel, Jesus did not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it.
Regarding the second part of your post - that is a valid question. There are many laws which are no longer kept even by jews, so I don't know what happened or why.

The old laws never went away, they were fulfilled. The law of love. If that is the only law left, then we should not have to worry about the 10 commandments. Just love your neighbor as yourself and you have fulfilled the law also.
If you love your neighbor as yourself,
You would not kill him
You would not steal from him
You would not commit adultery with his/her spouse
You would not covet his donkey, or a-s as the bible puts it.
And the list goes on.
I believe when He said it was finished and it was over, He refered to His life, He had fulfilled His purpose here on earth. He endured the worst death, being hung on a cross.

Do you mean "It is finished," as spoken by Jesus just before He died? Here He was saying that He had completed the work of salvation that the Father sent Him to do. That statement was not a reference to the law, but Jesus made it clear that He came to fulfill the law, not to destroy it.

I don't know how you came to that conclusion but okay. From what I read, when He said it was done, His whole reason for being was completed. He gave his life as a payment for humanity and ransom for our lives eternal. The Old laws going away? hmm, I don't think so because we now have the chance to let those same laws be engrained in our hearts and become like one with them and not so distanced from the effects of actually living in and by them. You do not do away with the old you just establish them and build upon them. He said it Himself.
God Bless and guide you into His Truth

Hebrews 10:15-17 (King James Version)
15Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
16This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
