I wince when I realize people have not learned tolerance from all these past mistakes.

Do you ever wince when a basic study of history would reveal all of the atrocities commited that were NOT in the name of God? Do you ever wince when you look at all of the good that believers have done all over the world and all of the love and kindness that has been shown by them? Don't generalize - there are good and bad people everywhere. It's not the religion - it's the people.

Once more I will say that they did not do this in the Name of God or Religion
Sure the people holding the torches might have said that but the real motivation behind it is greed of money power and land. The leaders just cover this up and call it religion
Any fool that believes religion is the only cause is not as smart as he or she thinks she is.

It's worse than wincing. I can start to cry like a little girl if I think about it for long.
And I don't think it is confined to history. Atrocities in the name of God still happen today.

I don't know how God works but He does everything for His Glory & we must accept that fact. All of the things done was because He knows the soul & what it would have the desire to do, therefore our sole reason to put our faith in Him no matter what happens. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the Almighty God, if we don't give Him the praise & our worship He will find ways of getting our attention.

The Inquisition where the results of a mad man. Not God. What would you consider the holocaust? Here we have the work of atheist attempting to destroy God's chosen people, I think mankind's atrocities far outweighs anything that Faith has done.

many evil things have been commited in the name of the LORD including teh crusaides. However we cannot base all christianity upon such extremests, becuase it is possible that tey were christian in their minds but not their hearts. Meaning they may have only beleived that they were chrsitian. Just is the same as anything else, we cannot base any thing upon a few extremests in the past. Not just beucase theyt were extremests and do not represent the "ordinary" but also becuase thost things occured in teh past and as everything else, christianity has grown since then.

Yes. In fact, learning the sordid details behind some of those things was what started the process that first led me into agnosticism and finally atheism. I have since come to a perspective that can accommodate those things and reconciled me to Christianity.

(Hint: The church pardoned people who confessed to them during the Inquisition. The civil courts killed people. The church actually tried to quell the witch-hunts, with mixed success. They didn't even use the Malleus Maleficarum, though a crazy Inquisitor wrote it. It was used by governmental "Inquititors.")

Such atrocities attest to the evil of the men who perpetrated them...not to God.
