Christianity was first considered a cult by Jewish religious leaders.

Write out a list of every single religious denomination, and you will have it.

Baptist, Catholic, Lutheren, Anglican, 7th Day, Mormonism, etc.

One that was short lived, the Shakers are a good example. Also the Marcions and the Essenes in the 1st century.

I think you would have to consider the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) a denomination, but LDS started out a cult of personality.

Branch Dividian would be a short-lived cult.

I'd definitely consider the Catholic church a sect that developed into a major denomination.

They started as a small offshoot of the Church founded by Jesus Christ.

They eventually found influence with the government and hid the word of God from the people to prevent them from seeing the truth. The rest of the story I'm sure you know.
