Plotonium is formed in nuclear plants, by bombardment of uranium with neutrons. This happens as a natural consequence of the decay of the uranium. The spent nuclear rods are reacted with hot nitric acid, and the resultant mixture is treated with flourine gas, to precipitate the PuF3. Further chemical reations lead to the production of pure plutonium.

Enriched uranium is produced by an entirely different method, which involves conversion of the uranium to uranium hexaflouride, which is then spun in a gas cetrifuge to separate the Uranium 235 hexaflouride from the uranium 238 hexaflouride.

Plutonium is among the most toxic substances known to man.
