Because the tax payers would not like paying that much in taxes, if the only reason you join the military is money then you really aren't what it needs and mainly because for all the talk about the military once the shooting is over it will be forgooten again except for how much money can we save but cutting it and are they really necessary because they makes us think the world isn't a safe place political thinking. Mostly though th first and last things-read the Rudyard Kipling poem about and named "Tommy," nickname for a British soldier is very acurate description of political and civilian thinking about the military. Like a policeman-love them when you need them but hate to see them otherwise.

Probably because it is funded by Congress, who still has yet to release funds to pay for our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen.
Personally, the military paid me much more than just a salary. It gave me a chance to wear the uniform, LIVE in Europe (not just visit there for a few days on vacation or business), decent chow, a place to sleep and keep my things, friends in foreign countries, a chance to participate in my nation's foreign policy, college benefits (and a place to work part-time during college!!!), job skills, and a professional attitude that I carry with me far beyond my days as an ARTILLERY!!!!! gunner.
Most exciting and fastest three years of my life!
I would actually be happier to pay higher taxes if I knew ALL of it went to defense spending.

This question only applies to the United States....
Our military are paid very well as is our teachers
Makes you wonder what they mean when they say the U.S. is such a rich country.
I know your military is larger but so is your population
These people are giving their lives for you........

Because then they would be congressmen.
The Military is doing ok. They aren't rich. And won't be, but they are doing much much better than when i started in 71 and have nearly doubled what I got when I retired in 93.

Exactly how high do you want your taxes to be?
I'm not saying they shouldn't be paid more, a lot more, I'm all for that. They deserve it. But the highest paid job is a bit much.

It's true they don't get paid enough. But at the same time if they get paid TOO much, people will join for the wrong reasons, and go AWOL when it gets tuff

If it was then tax would be much higher.
And far too many people would sign up for the reason of money. Would you rather fight for your country and fellow marines, soldiers and sailors, risking your life, or because of the money.

Pay is not really a consideration to any that has ever joined the military. It is about honor, courage and commitment.
