Yikes! I've gone through this but it is possible to stop especially since you've caught it early. First, take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. In the meantime, sequester him to a small room (such as bathroom with a vinyl, cleanable floor) with his litter box, water and bed. Then get yourself a blacklight and run around the house at night with the lights out and locate the pee/spray spots. The best product on earth to get rid of the smell is Anti Icky Poo. (look on the internet) I know, weird name but it works! the stuff in the petshops don't cut it. Very important to get rid of the smells as he'll just return to those areas. You can place food dishes where he has peed as cats won't pee where their food is. I'd agree with other folks....he's trying to tell you something! New pets in the family? New family or guests? Anything else new or changed? New litter? Moved the box? If his vet tests are clean, start letting him out supervised a little at a time, extending the periods of time if he's good. Yelling at him won't help....might help you feel better but won't help him! For more detailed info, check out books by Pam Johnson Bennett who is a well-known cat behaviorist. Good luck!

inappropriate elimination is the top reason for surrendered and euthanized cats.. it is sad, because 99% of the time it is fixable.
If this is a new and sudden behaviour change, then the first thing in order is a trip to the vet. Most likely is a urinary tract infection, and the cat associatese going pee in the box with the pain. Get him check out, because it is possible that he could become blocked - which is fatal.
If there are other pets in the house, or small children, or if his box is in a high traffic area, then it might be a security issue. If cats don't feel secure in their litterbox, they will go elsewhere. Get another box and place it in a quite secure location. Yes, get a second box. Some cats don't like urinating and deficating in the same box... so something as simple as adding an additional box to the house could eliminate your problems.
There is also a product called "cat attract" litter. very helpful to retrain cats to boxes after problems like this. unscented litter, usually scoopable, in an uncovered box is the most attractive to most cats - but every cat is different, so you could start offering different types of litter.. Yes, kind of a pain, but the cat is unhappy over something - either it is medical and some meds will help, or it is something in the environment and as his owners it is up to you to make it right.

Last year my wonderful Manx cat Theodore went out for the night and by no means got here back. I really like cats and the apartment did not consider the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. She was once very anxious and would pee everywhere the condominium. I located Cat Spraying No more on the net and the strategies worked close to immediately. I have never had a problem with Lola due to the fact. Effective! Cannot discontinue your cat peeing in the condo? Then fear no extra...

Here are some questions to ask to help you solve your problem. Has there been an introduction of anything new in the home? Like another pet and/or a new family member? I am not sure if he is being protective of his surrounding or if he is started to experience bladder problems. Is your cat neutered? If not, then there might be a female cat nearby in season. Has the litter box continued to be cleaned on a regular basis? Best solution is to take your cat to the vet. You know your cat's behavior and if something unusual is happening, then there is usually a reason. Seek you vet.

As others have pointed out, this is most likely a health problem...and in a cat of that age, it's probably a urinary tract infection of some type. Only a vet is qualified to diagnose this. I am surprised that you didn't know this and hope that you DO take your indoor cat to the vet at least once a year. Bad things can happen to good cats! Good luck to you all!

Have him checked for urinary tract problems: What you see is often the first sign of something gone awry.
If he does in fact have an infection, you may want to get a couple of plastic tarps to cover the furniture: That's what I had to do with my bed after the cat I had at the time refused to go back to his box. He eventually took the hint.

I would talk to your vet, he may have a urinary tract infection or kidney infection of some sort... Our cat started doing that on our carpets and floors and about a week of antibiotics seemed to clear it up.
The reasoning the vet gave us was that if it hurts when the cat goes to the bathroom they'll start to associate the pain with the litter box and that's why they start trying to go in other locations.

If this cat has been reliably litter boxed trained until now, get him to a vet. Odds are he has a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. I just went through this with my cat. They are in so much pain they can't control where they go. Once it was cleared up, the problem immediately stopped.

It's possible the cat has a medical condition that requires some attention. Pick up the phone. Make an appt with your vet and move on.
