I am not sure that 'Moises-F's' answer is what I would call "simple" ... but I guess we will have to take his word on that one ....!

December 25 is the day of the Winter Solstice, which was a pagan holiday. The early Catholic Church, when it conquered pagan peoples, assimilated this day into Christianity. They said, "Why worship the Sun, when you can worship the Son who created it?" They also incorporated "Santa Claus" (who used to be "Father Christmas, Old Man Winter, etc.) into the festivities, and they changed the Tammuz tree into a Christmas tree. The Tammuz tree was originally a fertility tradition, and the tree was a kind of phallic symbol, as well as the "ball" ornaments on the tree. People would bring their sacrificial gifts and place them under the tree. The Winter Solstice was a celebration of the peak of winter and a move toward the spring. This is when the days are at their shortest, and they start gradually lengthening from then on.
Although no exact date is given in the Bible for the birth of Christ, it is believed according to some clues that he was born in the Fall.

If you accept the truth, being that the Jesus story is based on the pagan myth of the sun's death (winter solstice) and rebirth three days later on December 25, then the date is correct. If, on the other hand, you believe that Jesus is god, then the date is incorrect. Some have pegged his birthday somewhere in the spring months. Others have drawn into question whether or not Jesus ever existed given that there is quite literally nothing historically, other than the writings in the bible, which shows he ever lived and walked this earth. Given that he allegedly performed miracles, one would think there would be other written accounts, wouldn't one?
Have a look at the movie linked below to see what I mean.

I understand that many people think He was actually born in the spring, because that was when the shepherds would be out, etc.
The pope altered the date to fit with some pagan holidays. He thought if he put it with the pagan holidays, the pagans would become Christian.

I don't know about a Pope doing it, but Dec. 25 is not the day Jesus was born. The shepherds were abiding their flocks by night. They do this when the ewes are lambing. Lambing occurs in the Spring. That also fits with Jesus being the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

It is true. Christmas was previously a pagan holiday to celebrate the winter solstice. Jesus was born in August.
Symbolic
Often since the event is observed as the reversal of the Sun's ebbing presence in the sky, concepts of the birth or rebirth of sun gods have been common and, in cultures using winter solstitially based cyclic calendars, the year as reborn has been celebrated with regards to life-death-rebirth deities or new beginnings such as Hogmanay's redding, a New Years cleaning tradition. Also reversal is another usual theme as in Saturnalia's slave and master reversals.

Jesus was born in late September or early October.
December 25th is actually a pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice.
It's 100% true that it's not Jesus' birthday.

Uh, no one knows when Jesus was born. (Though scholars are torn between May and September from what I understand.)
The church, when converting the pagans, decided to make the solstice celebrations of the pagan religions into a Christian holiday. They just did it to displace the pagan gods with the Abrahamic one. Really, it's a celebration of the rebirth of the sun.

Why does the date matter? It is a day that Christians have decided to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Calendars are just an attempt at counting time anyway...nothing special happens on ones birthday except that we have counted another 365 days(sometimes 366 days). I don't understand why atheist think this is a big "AH HAH...TOLD YOU" moment?

it is very simple. Jesus birthday is Tishri 15 a jewish month (September-October) exactly 6 month after his death Nisan 14 , this is according the prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27.
Reliving Jesus' Last Days on Earth
IT IS the seventh day of the Jewish month Nisan in the year 33 C.E. Imagine that you are observing events in the Roman province of Judea. Leaving Jericho and its lush foliage, Jesus Christ and his disciples are trudging up a dusty, twisting road. Many other travelers are also on their way up to Jerusalem for the annual Passover celebration. However, more than this tiring climb is on the minds of Christ's disciples.
TAWAEN, Incarnatrix of Evil: Jesus dies in passover (NISAN 14 ) between March -April according to Luke 22:1-19 and Exodus 12:1-5 and 13:1-5 , that date was given 1500 years before Jesus born, unless the bible lie Jesus died in spring and his birthday is six month later (Tishri 15)

They know that according to the Jewish calendar Jesus was born around that time of year, and it's just become tradition that we celebrate His birth on the 25th, although there is no proof it was actually on that exact day. Besides, we can celebrate His birth ANY day of the year !!
