I bought my dog from a pet store (I know, I know) but he made it very clear I wasn't walking out that door without him. Australian Shepherd - $500

I have adopted several dogs from shelters and I have bought dogs from breeders twice. The shelter dogs were under $100, and spayed or neutered. The breeders I used only bred the one breed (golden retrievers) and they had the parents on site in one case and the mother only on site in another (father was owned by someone else and was being shown at the time). The parents and litters were AKC registered - one dog I never bothered to register myself though he was eligible because I intended him to be a pet only and the other was an older puppy (8 months) that was already registered by the breeder - she was held by the breeder as a show and breeding prospect but she did not pan out due to an adult tooth that did not emerge. Both pups' parents had the appropriate health clearances for their breed. What I have paid has varied and not relevant since it varies so much by breeder, breed and situation.

I've always bought my dogs from reputable show breeders. I showed cocker spaniels for several years and I am fully aware of the problems you can find when you buy from a BYB, puppy mill or pet store. Currently I have a cocker spaniel and I met both of the parents. The dam was a dog I bred. I also have a miniature dachshund. I met the damn and a puppy from her first litter. I didn't meet the sire since he lives out of state, but I know a lot about him and have a photo of him. Both my dogs are registered with the AKC.

Reika-I got her from the local humane society. I did meet her mother when they came into the shelter. The pups were only 2 weeks old at the time. Her mother was a GSD with a very fearful and "freaky" personality. The puppies were put into foster care until they reached the age of 8 weeks, but sadly their mother wasn't as fortunate. She was so untrusting due to lack of socialization that she was unhandleable and had to be humanly euthanized. I never saw her father, but the lady that surrendered the litter said that a Sheltie lived near them. My Reika does look an awful lot like a Sheltie too so that's what I'm going with. And of course the shelter had many different shapes, sizes, colors, and breeds!!! We've been through many many obedience classes through the humane society and have also tried our hand at agility. We have been the demo team for multiple advanced obedience classes. She has a lot of potential and I hope to continue our education.

Harley-Harley is a long haired sable GSD. His registered name is ML-Lin's Lil Harbear. He's 12 years old now!! The breeder that had Harley produced litters for the Fedelco Guide Dog Foundation in Bloomfield Connecticut. His father was a Connecticut state trooper. We met neither of his parents, but did have a chance to meet his littermates. At the time we were required to attend puppy kindergarten through the foundation. He is registered with the AKC. He was shown in obedience, but never earned his CD. We paid $800 for Harley.

Riggs- Our Golden Retriever!! His registered name is Dashwood's Rolling in Clover. He's registered with the AKC. His father's kennel name was Cloverdale. His daddy was a champion who was also Golden Retriever sire of the year in 1998. Riggs is a Canine Good Citizen and is a certified therapy dog through TDI. He's done obedience, rally obedience, and agility (a bit lazy for agility). We got to meet his mother and his aunt. We met his mother before the litter was even thought of and the breeder was sure that all the puppies were spoken for before the mother was even bred. We paid around $750 for Riggs.

I have boughten all the dogs I have now from reputiable breeders. Three of them came from the same breeder. They are all registered with the AKC, and yes I have met the parents. Drove 1,400 miles to do it too. I have three Great Danes, and one on the way (six more weeks), and three Shelties. My avatar who is only two weeks right now I paid $1,700, she is from champion lines and we are planning on showing her. One of my Shelties was $1,600 we are showing him. Then the others were anywhere from $700-$1,200. Almost all the breeders I bought from only had one breed, except one breeder who had two breeds. She had Shelties and Australian Shepherds.

I have adopted a couple when I was younger and wanted a dog, and I think people who adopt are great. But I had always wanted Great Danes and Shelties, could never decide between the two because they are both great dogs, and I also used to help a lady show when I was younger and wanted to do it again. So that's why I decided on my dogs.

I bought him from a top breeder.

He is AKC registered Chinese Crested.

I paid $800.. pet price

Did not meet the parents. The breeder was busy getting ready for a show and had some of the dogs separated in various parts of the house. She knew I was coming and had my pup in an xpen with a few older pups that she was grooming. I could have seen them if I asked.. but I did not ask.

no other breeds.. she did have Sphynx Cats and Gypsy Vanner horses tho

Registered GSD breeder - The German Shepherd Dog League of NSW Inc
Registered with Dogs NSW (Australia)
Breed = GSD
"Adoption" fee = $800AU
View Parents = Yes, both mother and father
Other breeds = None

Heather S, you stated
"They brought him to us for free. He is by far the smartest dog we have ever had and the best dog around our kids and I didn't have to pay $1,000 for him just for the status of having a pure bred".

I applaud that you got a rescue dog, but please DO NOT PRESUME that everyone who gets a pure bred dog gets them for a STATUS symbol. Some people like to show their dogs, others research the breed before they get the dog, knowing in advance what the usual breed temperament and health problems are likely to be.

I adopted my female from the Humane society, and my male from the pound, the first time because I wanted a dog, the second time because he was too young and had too much potential to be euthanized (scheduled for the day after I adopted him).
They're both mutts, so no breed registry.
I paid a $50 adoption fee for the female, and I was working at the pound when I adopted the male, so there was no fee.
No idea of the parents of either.

The humane society and pound both have all different breeds and mixes.

I have a Bichonpoo. Please no designer dog cracks. I didn't set out to get a designer dog. I needed a small breed dog as per my landlord and I wanted a puppy that I could begin training from day 1 to be a service dog and a therapy dog. Unable to find a small breed puppy at a shelter or online I started researching small breeds. The cost of a purebred was out of my range. I found a breeder that bred Maltipoos and Bichonpoos out of his home. I met the breeder, checked out where he lived and the conditions the pup was living in. I met the dogs parents a White Bichon Frise and a Black Toy Poodle and her brothers. She was the happiest most friendly and good natured dog - still is. She is so gentle and is super intelligent. I paid just over $600 for her. It is worth every penny. I wouldn't trade her for the world. I didn't set out to purchase a designer dog to be a status symbol or keep up with the Jones'. Circumstances led me to a designer dog and I don't regret the purchase for a minutes.

Three of my four are rescues. Adoption fees of between 50-$200.

My American bulldog we got from a breeder after doing some research. I paid $600, for pet quality (he's a bit easty/westy) opting for no papers since he would not be bred or shown. We certainly did meet the parents and the breeders before deciding to go with this litter. they had no other breeds, only American bulldogs, only breeding twice a year. the breeder kept my dog's sister to use for his breeding stock so I am fully confident that it was a good breeding. Penn Hip scored good/excellent.
